I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice about overclocking

Basically I want to try to overclock my computer a bit and Im unsure as to if its possible to do so and how far I could go with it or if I can't do it. My system specs are:

processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E6500 @ 2.93GHz
graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 240
RAM: 8Gb Corsair Vengeance
Motherboard: Gigabyte P41T-D3

Any ideas on how far I can get if at all with this setup?

Thanks for any help!

CPU cooling currently is just Stock I could easily get something better. and I think the only case cooling I have is the um fan on the back of my Poseidon case... but I can't tell you for the life of me the size of it/efficiency.

Your motherboard is not great for overclocking, and also using a stock cooler will affect the overclock.

this is a very basic explanation of overclocking

its basic maths. your E6500 is rated at 1066mhz. you always divide this number by 4 so 1066/4= 266, this is your fsb. (or cpu frequency)
then your processor (cpu) has a multiplier of 11 (or cpu ratio)
so 266 x 11 = 2930mhz or 2.9GHz, your stock speed

download cpu-z and lt will tell you all the info you need. (make a note of ram speed, volatge etc.)

boot into bios,
and disable C1est, and any other power saving features.

unlink your ram, using the ram divider, so it stays at stock speeds, you can overclock the ram later.
this means leave it at 667mhz or 800mhz or 1066 or whatever it should be

can you raise the fsb? yours is now 266. try rising it to 280
boot into windows
download realtemp and coretemp (google them)
install and run them
then download Intel Burn Test (IBT) and run it.
have a look in task manager and under the performance tab, notice how much free ram is listed.

in IBT set threads to 2 (for 2 cores) and then click on custom ram and enter an amount just below the free amount.
eg. i have 2520mb free ram. so i enter 2500 into the custom ram.
run the test for 10 passes. for now,
and then at final speed you want, run for 50 passes
keep an eye on temps (do not let it go over 75.c)

or download prime95 and run the torture test/large fft's

if test runs fine, go back into bios, and change frequency (fsb) to 300 (300 x 11 = 3300MHz or 3.3GHz) and repeat the tests.
keep doing this in 20mhz steps until windows will not boot.
When this happens, just go back a step (remove 20 from the fsb) to the last stable frequency,
or
just raise the cpu voltage a couple of levels. it should now boot.
its a balancing act, higher voltages will get you higher fsb, but it will also give you higher temps.
afaik your max voltage is 1.36v
the trick is to do this step by step,

Ok Ill give this a go cheers. and will do, I think I tried reading the sticky before... and got a bit confused since I had read a Overclocking guide before which was not as good.

Uh oh seems just that little change and my coretemp raises drastically whilest doing the IBT that is... its as if my fan isn't even there.

Yeah I guessed its cause Im using a stock heatsink ahah. Im not sure what heatsink to get to replace my current one... or if I should just wait a bit and buy a watercooling system or something.

Hmm well I am planning a big upgrade sometime this year... but the next thing I am going to buy computer wise is a graphics card since mine is now 3 years old ahah. I only built this rig in last march and all I cared about was that it managed to run well which it still does :P. But anyway Im probably going to go for a second gen i5 once the ivy bridge is released or one of the 2011 processors after ivy bridge release.

In that case, I probably wouldn't put much money into this rig. Though the Gelid is 1155 compatible so would be usable in your sandy/ivy bridge rig.

Yea. Im mainly planning on keeping my current case etc :) cause Gigabyte Poseidon aren't sold anymore and its a beautiful case :D Ill probably just run stock speeds for now then unless I really feel the need to overclock again :p. probably gonna keep the parts of the rig I have atm and get a cheap case to play around with.

what is the max temp?
IBT is extreme, but if it passes 10 runs, it is more or less stable.
Using Prime95 instead, will give you slightly lower temps, but imo it takes longer to find an unstable overclock.

dont forget you can get it to 75.C ish, ;)

run IBT at stock speed and record max. temp.
overclock the cpu by 20Mhz then run the test again, what is the max temp?
this way you might even get it a bit higher.

on my old E3300 i got it from 2.5 to 3.0 on a stock cooler,

The first run of IBT it got to 70C on the 5 run which isn't exactly great. Then when I changed my fans setting in BIOS to run at maximum all the time on the first run it hit about 70 again but was still climbing. :/ Also I couldn't find the setting in BIOS so I could seperate my RAM from the FSB, couldn't even see a ratio for it either.... but it was still running the same as before I Overclocked. That is whilest overclocking it. My stock max temp is about 55C apparently. Runs usually at 34C even whilst gaming etc.

i would leave it for now then, either get a better cooler or just leave it at stock speed.
Is the stock cooler clean? no dust etc...

Have no clue haven't had a look in quite a while. Ill just wait for now untill I get enough money to get a 1115 or 2011 chipset and a shiny i5 to go with it I guess :)
