Those are similar processors, but different generations. So is the i3 any better for all around use and some gaming?

I am considering buying a new i3 or a used e8400/e8500.

In a straight 2 core (no HT) battle the E8400/8500 @ 4.0 will beat the i3, but most other applications the i3 will win.

In gaming terms mmos like wow and Starcraft 2 that are 1-2 core bound cpu intensive games the E8400 is faster, most other games the i3 will be faster.

I think it comes down to price, if the E8400 is cheaper by a reasonable distance go for it, otherwise the new i3 with upgrade scope is the better option.

Interesting I've got an old E8400 at home in spain, was going to buy and i3 but might try and bring the E8400 home.

Hi, here is a perfect compare for you :

;) even overclocked to 4.0 GHz E8400 is no match for i3 2100

Thanks, this test is just what I was looking for. E8400 is no match for i3.
I am building a new system, because old one will be going to someone else. I'm almost embarassed to say, but it's AMD 64 3000... Just slow as snail.

I posted a new thread for the full system:

Nothing to be embarrassed about at all, I'm running a 3870k Llano and It's sweet for my htpc. Over 80fps @ 1080p in tiger woods online and over 50fps in bfbc2 @720p. Don't always believe the hype.

I play more games like Need for Speed and other 3D action games, so I could see for myself it's no go for 2 years now.
