i3 530 Overclocking.

H50 thermal paste is good stuff, don't bother changing it.

4.6 is a little optimistic. Most people run their i3's at 4.0-4.2 day in day out.

Yeah, 4.6 might be doable, but only with insane voltages - at least that is what I reckon from experience with mine.

4.2 runs nicely at 1.3V, but above 4.2 requires huge jumps in voltage.

You in luck as I’ve just been reading up on Core i3 overclocking and I've found out that you shouldn't pair the i3 Clarkdales with regular P55 boards. If you want the best results for overclocking you should use a H55/H67 based chipset – combine a i3 540 with the Gigiabyte H55-UD2H and 4.6Ghz is very much achievable.

Edit:

Sorry I've re-read your post and you have already bought the parts. Good luck.

Then you are reading the wrong sites.

H55 boards are perfectly fine, and the Giga UD2H is what most people pair a 530 with.

Ran mine at 4.2GHz from day one (though I used 4.0 for the most part).

The bandwidth speeds for the most part come down to the mem controller, and as they are on the CPU you are going to get similar scores on any board when using the same CPU.

Oh you mean those pointless 'officially supports' numbers ;)

I thought you were talking real world bandwidth.

Eitherway you'll be able to run your memory over spec on a H55 easily enough.

Not that you'd need to as it has hardly any impact on real world aps, have a read of the big Toms Hardware memory roundup where they tested from 800MHz to 2000MHz at varying CAS latency, barely makes a couple % difference in the majority of situations.

In fact most of the time it is the latency that has the biggest impact.

Hey guys. There's this thread next door where we've been discussing about the I3. How good is it vs I5 7xx in SINGLE THREADED benches please?

thanks

Single thread clock for clock should be the same as it's the same core.

Only thing that might come into effect is that the i3 has a slightly weaker memory controller (as it's off the main CPU die, actually part of the GPU).

So it's the same architecture but optimized to 32nm + HT & built in GPU?
It also has lower TDP so not surprised it hits 4.2 easy.

On the other hand, I've seen they scored 7000-8000 in Fritz Chess (4 threads with HT on) @ 4GHz, which is not too impressive

Hey that's a great score! 2750 is better than mine (no surprise) and pretty close to I7 @ 4Ghz

I guess even with HT on if you run a single processor test HT is not affecting those scores right?
I really think it's an awesome budget build for FSX

Thanks mate

Nice, I'll stay tuned.
Wonder what speeds can those chips do with HT off because if I'm not wrong disbling HT helps with OC. Is that on water or air?

I'd better go to sleep now. I'm just about to go crazy and order a I3 530 + Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
Does the 540 overclock better then?

Cpu seems solid now, CPU @ 4.2ghx QPI @ 6.4, RAM at 1600mhz 24,7,8,7

Gelid cpu cooler.

I tried higher clocks and seems ok so far.

what would be the best mobo to overclock an I3 530 as much as possible please? would it be just as effective with a I5 750?
I don't care about USB3.0 or Sata6, just OC

thanks in advance
