Hi I have owned Intels for many years changed to AMD back in 2004 for a few years and went back to a I5 I have a I3 4170 at the moment but I want to upgrade to something new, I like the the fact that the I3 is now 4 core 4 thread for less than £100 but the AMD ryzen 3 2200g looks good too, what chip has more power for games as there is only £10 price difference between the two.

You do know that if you chose the AMD over the Intel CPU you may need a new motherboard etc?

On Monday AMD are releasing a new series of CPU's, the 3000 series, so you should at least take a look at those to see if they suit you better.

If all you want to do is change the CPU then you'll be stuck looking at Intel options, but if you want to fully upgrade the computer, which would be a new cpu/motherboard and maybe RAM minimum. it would be good for you to give a budget and a list of your current system specs so that we, the forum, can help you to get the best possible system.

Hi yes thanks for the reply I need a new mobo anyway im on a older socket 1156 I think, I bought some DDR4 last week from OCUK basically I want a chip less than £100 and a board Less than £75 if the AMD is as stable as Intel I am happy to go with the Ryzen 2200G with a B450 motherboard, if however the cheapest new AMD is close to £100 I might consider that. I also like the look of the 9100F with a B360 board, but I have heard that if it needs the bios flashing for the coffee lake refresh you cant do it without the onboard graphics which seems strange to me if my RX470 is plugged in.
 
You have a rx470 why are you looking at ryzen 2200g, it is a weaker gpu and cpu is only a quad, you'd be better off with a 2600 more cores/threads and no on board GPU.

Really 8 threads should be a minimum for a new machine so 2400g is 8 thread 2600 is 12 thread.

There are some deals to be had on old gen 1 ryzen, it might be old but its not crap.

Thanks for the info I am using a old i3 2 core 2 thread, I thought the 2200g 4 core would be a big improvement but if its not that good I might have to bag a bargin on a gen 1 chip. I will check prices on a 2600.
 
It is an upgrade but it's kinda pointless as it will strill be a bottleneck in games. Just get a 2600 non-x, a cheap motherboard and 2x4GB 3000mhz ram.

Also a 2nd hand i7-4770 to replace your Haswell i3 would be a good option either and less hassle/lot cheaper.
 
If that 4770 drops in his board that's probably a much better value option all around on cost front assuming the chips don't cost the earth, but of course you won't need your ddr4 if you do that, you could always send it back.

looks like its £110 for a 4770k on cex. That gen of CPU is around the speed of gen1 ryzen. perhaps a touch faster with ability to Overclock.

2600 is £128 at the moment, 6 cores and 12 threads would make for a hell of an upgrade plus a cheap B450 mobo.

EDIT: You want to also get a cheap CPU cooler like the Hyper 212 Evo as the little wraith stealth that comes bundled with the 2600 isn't the best. My wife is using it on her 2600 but then her case has very limited room for cpu coolers (specifically the height). Its on the to "to be upgraded" list but for now its fine.

This is a nice bundle but I have a micro atx case so I would need a micro atx b450 mobo, I wont be overclocking, even though i have 3200 ddr4.

Ah sorry, in that case you could either:

- Change to a full ATX case (I say this as MB options for mATX are generally more limited).
- Get something like this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/gigabyte-b450-aorus-m-socket-am4-ddr4-matx-motherboard-mb-573-gi.html

Note - there may be better board options but you want one with decent I/O, VRM's*, M2 slot(s), PCI-e and 4 memory channels (some of them only have two).

*Can't really tell on that Aorus board but it should be fine for a 2600 and then future upgrade to a 3600/3700 level CPU (non-x).

Thanks I don't want to waste money on a CPU that isn't that good, I want it to last me 5 years or more so I think your right spend a bit more on a 2600, the I7 is an interesting option, but I'm ready for a full on upgrade.

That board looks good I will probably go with that and keep my corsair case, I was toying with the idea of a bigger case for a bit more airflow in the summer months.
 
Definitely look at some reviews of it as I have no experience with it myself.

I can't imagine it would be a bad option mind, especially for the 2600. :)
