i3 vs Pentium + general advice for budget steam machine.

Try to get a higher end i3 if you can. Ideally one with HT'ing (2 core +2 virtual). They perform only marginally worse than the equivalent i5's.
 
The Pentiums shouldn't be written off as they are actually very good value for the money. See this review of the G3220 (3ghz) for gaming performance. I have built two general purpose pc's now using Pentiums (G3220 and G3420) and they are cool running and use very little power. If it was me i would get the Pentium and a dedicated gpu anytime over a overpriced i3 with built in gpu.
 
go for anyone that has hyperthreading,i also have the g3220 and its fine for gaming with a 7850 gpu

ive tried using a Pentium g620 and it stuttered compared to the g3220
