Sorry if this has been posted before.

I wish to overclock my 2500k, however, I am very much a beginner and not sure what to do. Would really appreciate if someone could provide me with some tips and what settings to change.
 
or if only looking for a quick and simple OC (4.2>4.4).

Simply leave everything on auto and change:
- turbo values from 3.7/3.6/3.5/3.4 to say 4.2/4.2/4.2/4.2
- Set overspeed protection to disabled.
- and increase the long/short duration power limits to something like 160/190

Job done.

Lazy man's OC I know but that's me.

And of course make sure that you are running a decent after-market CPU cooler.

PS. Mine makes 4.3 on all cores at 1.28v and has been 100% stable for 18 months now. Plus will run any number of hours Prime / IBT fine at decent temps even with a mid range cooler like the Gelid Tranquillo.

Thanks mikeo, that sounds good. That's all i'm really after around 4.2 - 4.4 overclock, I will give it a go.

I'd be very surprised if your I5-2500k wont do at least 4.2 on auto.

In my opinion... with these CPU's, it's only if you want to go above this level, that you need to start setting voltages manually and disabling EIST, C-state etc.

Also... doing it this way and also leaving on all the "green features", means your CPU only spins up when you need it to.

Very good points, though beware of going high than 4.2 on Auto as it automatically put the voltage a lot higher than you need it to be.. Normally 4.5 On turbo will push you over the recommended voltage limit..

If/when you want to get to 4.5Ghz, id follow these steps:

  • Disable C States/Green states
  • Set voltage to 1.3V
  • LLC to High
  • Ensure Tubro is Off and Multiplier is set to 45

Test using prime (and if it passes prime a few games). If it BSOD's up the voltage a little (1.31ect), if it passes, you can try turning the voltage down.. (1.29 ect).

Just remember the safe voltage limit for a 24/7 overclock is 1.4V..

Don't know that particular board/BIOS.

But basically just increase the turbo values to something like 4.2 (and leave everything else alone) and have a go. Can't do any harm :)
All the short/long duration power limits do, is prevent the multiplier from dropping if you start to draw too much power (EG. during Prime95 you will see the multiplier fluctuate).

or have a play around as DoomedSpeed suggests. Though obviously doing it this way will mean your CPU is running at a fixed voltage / multiplier (nothing wrong with that obviously).

PS. Looks like your BIOS has something similar (IE. turbo power limit)

Though I would suggest leaving that at auto for now and just try increasing the turbo multiplier and running something like Prime95 and seeing what happens (check via CPUz to see if it holds the multiplier OK).
Someone with a similar Gigabyte board might like to comment here.

So all i've adjusted in BIOS is the multiplier to 42, vcore to 1.235v and LLC set to high. This changed the speed and all seems stable, although for some reason when running IBT or Prime95 the vcore fluctuates from 1.236v and 1.248v in CPU-Z

Question... what is the Turbo Power limit set to?
as you may well need to increase this.

Voltage fluctuation is normal under load from my experience.

Though if your system is stable (and temps are decent) by increasing the multiplier / voltage etc. and you are happy with this, then fine :)

Though if you wanted, you can keep increasing the multiplier untill it blue screens. Then either increase the voltage a bit, or back off the multiplier until stable. Up to you really. This is all part of the fun ;)
 
I left the turbo power limit to auto. It said in the information next to it that this setting is something to do with the CPU TDP, i'm not sure what that means so I left it.

At 1.248v my temperature maxes out at 65C which seems good. I think I will try and increase the multipler until its unstable like you say. Thanks again.
