Hi, I've just completed a build using a 2500K and a Asus p8p67 mobo and wondered what the normal idle running temperature of the CPU should be. The EZ BIOS shows 109 DegC, I thought this seemed hot so switched off.

as a rough guide, idle should be around 30 deg C, sometimes a little less. Full load temps you are looking at 60 to 65 Deg C at most, sometimes a little less.

109 sounds like a config problem as mentioned above.

I'll try reseating the cooler, but I'll need to get some thermal paste.

The exiting thermal contact seems to be three small pads, will they have to be removed to reseat it?

three small pads, are you using the standard intel cooler by anychance?

i used that cooler and it was very poor, my 2600k idles in the bios at 50+, however yours is 109!!!, it must not be seated correctly or the fan isnt spinning up fast. i have the same board btw

ii got mine down to 42 by putting the fan on fullspeed from say 30c, because at default setting in the bios the fan would not speed up until the temp hits 80c if i remember correctly

oh if it is the intel cooler make sure you hear all four legs click.

I did have a problem with the cooler fan when I first switched on, the cable wrapped around it had been pulled to tight and obstructed the fan, I pulled it out of its clips to let it hang loose. I then ran OK but seemed to hot.

It's been reseated now and is running at 45 DegC.

When originally fitting the intercooler all four legs appeared to click into place OK, same as this time.

I've got my I5 2500K running at 37c idle and around 60c on load at 4.4ghz on cooler master 212 +. Seems rather high to me when compared to other peoples CPU, and their temps on stock cooler..

My 2500k at 4.6Ghz with 1.272V displayed in CPU-Z hits a maximum of 65 degrees according to Real Temp under Prime95 load. Idle is just under 30 degrees. I'm using an original TRUE with the 1156 bolt through kit as a cooler.

if when you took the cooler off the thermal paste was still in three sections on the base and not spread out across the whole of the base the cooler was not seated correctly.

Yes, 109c is a bit epic. My i5 2500k (Currently clocked at 4.65Ghz, 1.355v in Bios, 1.38 effective under load) idles at 20-30degrees (I have seen 17 degrees on CoreTemp!) and harsh (8hours) Prime95 Blend load makes it hit 70degrees.

This is with a Zalman CNPS9500A, so hardly a top end cooler.

My 2600k is hitting 69c on small ffts with 1.32v (cpuz) @4.6GHz. 22c-24c room temp and a H50 in push/pull with akasa vipers. Is this about right? lol

I'm guessing you have HT on? if so those temps are perfectly normal. If I'm honest, this is a far cry from the old Bloomfield and Lynnfield processors, which I think is throwing people.

Once people neared the 4Ghz barrier on the i5 and i7s before, temps would rocket to nearly 80degrees (and usually higher in the case of the i7s) in most cases under load. Now these new gen appears to get to around 4.6ghz and with decent cooling the chips have trouble reaching above 70!

Tell me about it, that's partly why I sold my x58 kit on while it's still worth a fair bit before it gets superseded. I was more than happy with the performance, but the temps we're quite high for my liking and I didn't want to clock down. Plus my board took a good while to post, which put me off getting an ssd, but that's another matter :p

Also yep HT on, everything enabled.

My i5 2500k is @ 4.4 with 1.3v (could probably get more but not tried yet). Just did a prime blend overnight and max temp was 53C with a noctua NH-D14

2500K with Akasa venom cooler at stock speed:

Running 30 to 36 degrees idle. I reckoned it should (or could) run at lower temperatures.

So I removed and reapplied the thermal paste today. Now getting 27, 32, 27, 32 (ish) on idle. 1 hour on prime95 blend test gave me max temps of 58 degrees. I believe that thermal paste (arctic silver 5) properties improve over time.

Only thing that bugs me slightly now is cores 2 and 4 always run five degrees or so hotter than cores 1 and 3. Even when all cores in use 100% in prime95 test. Not sure if this is due to poor application of compound or what.
