Quick question regarding my I5 2500K. I have the processor installed with a Corsair H50 cooler (single fan at the mo), which I have yet to overclock. On windows it states the CPU runs at 3.3 Ghz.

I have just downloaded CPU-z and have noticed that the core speed is fluctuating from 3,300mhz down to 1600 mhz, and the multiplyer adjusting accordingly (from x16 to x36) when the normal desktop is running without any applications.

Is this normal?

ah the daily speedstep question is still being asked. The CPU will drop voltage and frequency to save power and ramp up to 3.3GHz on demand. Everything is working as it should be.

when your carry out a task that doesn't require too much cpu usage it (e.g. browsing the web) it will stay at 1.6Ghz so it can save power. But when you get to applications that require a fair bit more cpu usage (e.g. video encoding) it will jump up to 3.3ghz. So the cpu will automatically recognise when it needs to increase or decrease its speed. Hope this helps
