Hello People,

I think i know the answer to this question already but here goes...

Built my new system today and all running good but more on that when i put my build log together.

Wanted to go ahead and unleash the i5 2500k power but though i would check the stock temps 1st and this is the result after running Intel Burn Test

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

As you can see it hit 77c this seems to hot.

The only thing i can think off looking back at my build that was abit silly is i applied my AS5 compund to the processessor and smoothed off with a old credit card as per instructions, picked up my CPU cooler which is a artic freezer 7 and installed as instructed but notice there was the factory applied gunk on the bootom of the cooler but fitted anyway.

Could it be that the 2 compunds are actually limiting the heat transfer?

If so i will take it off tomorrow and clean re-apply AS5 then try again.

Or is it just not a very good cooler? reviews seemed to state it was good enough to hit 4.4 - 4.6 Ghz with.

Mobo is a Asus P8Z68-V/Gen 3 if that makes any difference.

Many thanks

too hot for stock clocks imo, does it have backplate or pushpins? check its mounted correctly, and as5 is old hat nowadays imo,mx2 or mx4 or noctuas thermal paste is better, but even with as5 it shouldnt be that hot

yes mixing compounds and probably too much thermal paste, less is more, apply so thin that it just covers the chip

No its a push pin cooler, i will take it off tomorrow or moday and remove the paste (whats the best method for this) then will try again!

If still no good will go for a better cooler all together.

if you have no remover fluid then a kitchen towel and rub off untill clean, and make double sure that the intel push pins click into place, each one,but dont press too hard as you might damage the mb,your goal with thermal paste is to use as little as possible and just mask the chip surface so that its not seen

if you do go for another cooler buy one with a metal backplate, its far easier and less likely to flex/damage your mb

I use screen wipes to remove the thermal paste.

No need to be overly fancy with removing thermal paste, I do it with vodka and a piece of lintless cloth. Also, it is true what they say about less being more in this case, the purpose of the thermal compound is merely to fill in/even out the imperfections on the cpu/heatsink, surface to surface connections are much more preferable without an unnecessary layer of paste in between.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies,

I removed the cooler earlier cleaned off the paste, reapplied and ran the tests again.

Temps seem about 4c cooler but still doesnt enocourage me to want to overclock yet.

Reviews on the OCUK shop seem to imply this cooler is good and idle around 20c (mines more like 28c-32c) and on full load 60c (mines 68-topped out at 74c after IBT on high)

When i run Prime 95 the temps are lower than IBT maxed out at 65c

When i play BF3 its sits at around 60c

Do you think this cooler has been vitim to people making it out to be better than it is in the reviews?

Should i try a different cooler?

Was thinking either the Gelid Tranquillo or a corsair h60

Any thing else i could try?

It might be worth mentioning that the case i have is a fractal R3 with the 2 fans in came with, i might try moving the front fan up to the slot above it as this would then push air on a more direct route to the cpu cooler.

Temp was from Speccy, but just went into the bios and its showing 24c so that seems ok, Speccy must just be taking a weird reading.

Something that also may be related.

I have the Kingstone Hyper Grey Ram when 1st installed it showed as 1333mhz
so i changed it in the bios to XMP as i was told this would set the ram to 1600 and 9-9-9-27 timings, but it still shows the ram voltage as 1.65v how can i change that voltage to 1.5V? could that cause it to run hot?

Any other setting in the bios that could be causing it to run hot?

ram voltage wont affect temps, only cpu voltage and maybe vccio for the integrated memory controller inside the cpu,but mainly cpu voltage

vccio should be no more than 1.2v normally its 1.05v or around the 1.15v mark,

ibt is a hard stressing program anyway nevrmind using the crappy intel cooler, for gaming ect and general use 60c mark while under mild loading is fine, but you will see huge improvement under 100% stress with an aftermarket cooler

i dont know as ive never used it,ive used the akasa nero s and that aint too good either, the hyper 212 is it? ive heard good things about that, try and avoid intel push pin coolers if you can

or any of the corsair h watercoolers should do fine

Ram voltage won't make the CPU run much if any hotter, but you should definately manually set it to 1.5v in the voltage option page at the bottom as 1.65v isn't advised for Sandy Bridge.

Hmm think i will try a different cooler then.
When i set the profile to xmp it wont let me change the ram viltage or am i missing somthing?

just set ram up manually without xmp like this, set memory frequency to 1600mhz,dram voltage to 1.5v and type in timings here

Go to Advanced then Ai Tweaker. Scroll to the bottom and type it in manually.

Would pay to give it a pass of Memtest86+ afterwards just to make sure its stable, you can run it off a spare USB stick if you have one: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Artic Freezer pro 7 is a fairly poor cooler at best.
One of the best budget coolers is the Gelid Tranquillo
Or the best ones are Noctua NH-D14, Noctua NH-D14- with PWM Fans or Phanteks PH-TC14PE

I wouldn't bother with the H60, it's not brilliant. If you fancy an ALC go for Antec Kúhler H2O 920 or Corsair Hydro H100

As with any large cooler check your case to make sure it'll fit.

Also try to lower your DRAM voltage to 1.5v or 1.55v. Running at 1.65v on a Sandy Bridge may reduce the life of your CPU.

EDIT: Jeez there were only 13 posts when I started typing lol :D

If you can find stock, get the Silver Arrow over the D-14, its cheaper and the performance is the same. But yes I agree plenty of better coolers on the market, Gelid Tranquillo is great for the money as is the Zalward Vapor 120, used both in builds.
