Hey, the title pretty much says it all,

I want to get 5ghz at least, maybe 5.1 or 5.2 stable, i will have a full watercooling loop. Which would be my best choice?

I have my i5 2500K @ 5GHz @ 1.38v which is the cheapest option. It doesnt have hyperthreading like the other two but as a gamer multitasking is not a neccesity :)

Idles @ 32-34C and load never goes over 75c on air cooling :D

Some on OCUK say you should not take a SB CPU over 1.35V so if you decide to take one past that voltage you may be at risk of damaging the CPU. I decided to take that risk.

Probably either the 2500k or the 2600k (difference between the 2600k and 2700k is that the 2700k comes at a slightly faster stock speed which as we well know can be achieved by changing one setting anyway) if you go 2600k you get HT but this adds up to 10C of heat (think with watercooling it should probably be a lot less than that but thats what you get on air at least)

Im still abit caught in the middle of one of these or the i7 3820 - E version. It looks solid, but do you know whether or not it could reach the same temperatures?

The SB-E from what I understand can hit 4.7Ghz or so. May I ask why you actually want a 5Ghz+ cpu? you don't really gain that much in real life situations from that high a clock speed. Also when considering SB-E it's only really worth it if you use a lot of thread heavy applications/render a lot etc.

The game i play, the wa it is made, bclk overclock helps tremendously, however i play it competitively and the rules are no bclk overclock, however bios is allowed, and helps a lot, it helps you kill faster, which is a bonus, and seeing as everyone else does it, well, i want to aswell :)

I play WarRock, upping BCLK makes you kill and run faster, overall the game runs faster, yet a program on the competitive website detects this, but bios is allowed, which isnt as effective, but is still worth the extra time.

What route do you reckon i should take??

2500/2600/2700k or i7 3820??

id get a 3770k simply because it is the latest technology available, apparantly they overclock better as well. otherwise, 2700k, as this is the most stable overclocker. get some decent cooling (definately recommend watercooling for 5ghz+ IMHO)
good luck

2600k = 2700k BTW. The 3820's are overclocked to 4.75Ghz by changing the BCLK so that would be little use to you. Either a 2600k or a 2500k I doubt you need the extra threads. Going IB when you want 5Ghz would be quite hard to achieve. I might read up about this game it intrigues me that a game is based around the CPU's overall performance. Seems rather pointless to me.

No point in overclocking a processor so much bro, just a tip, clock speed is the least reliable performance factor, in other words its not as important as for instance, MIPS or FLOPS of the actually chip. So once again, oc'ing the chip to 5Ghz is going to gain you very little;)

MIPS and FLOPS doesn't actually mean much. IPC is what causes both of those thus making it the most important thing about a chip.

go for a 2600k HT off should be easy for 5ghz
plus you gonna need luck on the chip i heard the 2700 dont clock as good now since IB been out so unsure if that also affects the other 2

Did You get that cpu from ocuk or eles where.

Elsewhere actually as it was a little cheaper. In retrospect however I prob would have got it from OCers....their customer service in unparallelled and worth a few extra quid.

Bear in mind I am a novice overclocker.....Running it at 4.8ghz at 1.36V just by upping the multiplier and setting the voltage manually. Shame the voltage doesn't scale down like in offset mode when the cpu is idle however....
