i5 2500K ZOTAC Z68, tempreture reding different while in bios setting compared to windows

I noticed that the temperature rises rapidly from 30C to 54C while in the BIOS setting (monitored in the BIOS setting).
However in windows 7, I get only 32C without load, measured with a temperature program.
I have two explanation, either the program under windows reads something different compared to the BIOS or
the cpu is on a much higher load while in the BIOS setting menu.

Has anyone a better explanation and noticed a similar behaviour with other cpus.

Some people say its because while in the BIOS, the CPU cant use speed step to slow the CPU down and save power and heat.

I have the same behaviour with my set up, reads 55c in bios but in realtemp its 33c doesn't make sense

I have a similar reading with my i5 2500k 10 - 15 degree's hotter in bios than when idle on my desktop. I think the culprit is as Stulid said Intels speedstep not available when in bios.

Either way i dont think its anything to worry about

Temperature monitoring is usually out by a margin to TJ max. The whole area of accurately monitoring temps is a PITA to be honest as there's so much to go into and so much conflict between what is said. I looked into it a while back and eventually gave up caring. So long as my temps remain below TJ max, I'm happy.

MSI boards are the same as I recently found out. Built the system and checked temp in BIOS when I first booted it up. 55°c. I originally panicked... and thought I would have to reseat the cooler. However when in Windows it dropped 20°c. I put it down to a dodgy BIOS. Just glad I installed windows before panicking and reseating the cooler.

I also noticed when overclock to 4.5Ghz (2500k) that it never made any difference to temp reading in BIOS... Windows reported the difference of course.

My current Asus maximus formula board shows only a few degrees of difference. Same with most older quality boards. These new boards are a bit pfft!
