I'm currently building a medium-spec gaming PC for my brother, and managed to nab a B-grade i5 3450 for very little. However, due to it being B-grade, it didn't even come with a stock cooler, and as his budget was £750 and I'm currently at £749.06 I can't afford a decent cooler just yet.

At the moment it's got an old stock cooler from a Q6600 on it. Fortunately the motherboard had optional LGA775 holes for coolers, so it fit, but it's not great.

After running for a few minutes it reaches about 62 Celsius and then stabilises about there. Is that acceptable? That's without running any programs though, as his DVD-drive hasn't arrived yet so I've been unable to install Windows yet. Should I encourage him with great urgency to invest a little extra in a cooler, or will it survive for the meantime?

It will survive, the Q6600 cooler will be larger than the default cooler which would have come with the cpu anyway.

What is the RPM speed of the fan?

But I would look at getting a decent cooler anyway :)

62c at idle? i got a 3470 that idles in the 20s. i would firstly check the cooler is mounted properly and secondly go buy a cooler of any description quickly, certainly before trying to install any windows. i use a xigmatek thor's hammer which cost £16 delivered from that auction site. it's quite tall and uses push pins for the 1155 socket which i'm not that happy about but it seems to work well. my main reason for purchase was the low price.

I'd be very worried if 60C was a idle. If a bit of load went on it, it would likely shoot up.

Save pennys and get a decent CPU cooler asap. There are many nice value ones avalible which cost very little but do a fantastic job. Could you lend your brother £25 or so and get him to pay it back with 10% interest? :D
