i5 3570k Overclock Temps?

For a friend:

Got an i5 3570k at 4.4GHz / 1.4v pre-built system from Overclockers that I replaced the cooler with a Corsair H60 as it was crashing/overheating.

I've never overclocked an i5 before so not sure what the guidelines are.

Is 1.4v "safe" for long term? I know with i7's it's a bit much..!
Load temp still reaches 90'c with the H60.

Am I expecting too much from the H60 or should load temp be a lot lower than that?

My main rig also uses both a 3570K and H60 cooler. I can manage 4.2GHz at 1.16v and temps never exceed 70°C on even the hottest of days. If I push onto 4.4GHz, I need a lot of extra voltage.

In my opinion, the volts, heat and additional noise associated with those additional 200MHz are just not worth it for the tiny gains :)

Thanks, though as much.

Will lower it down to 4.2GHz and see how low I can get the volts.

It started crashing (locking up / no bsod/restart etc - so not enough v I guess)

I'm used to my nice lower voltage 4790k at 4.5GHz running no warmer than 70c :p

Maybe you're actually just over volting it?

Mine runs 4.4 GHz by setting the turbo to 44 on all cores and I've set the voltage to 1.18v

With a Noctua air cooler and running Prime95 with small FFTs I get 51 DegC on the hottest core after ~10mins (I had to check that because I initially thought I was doing something wrong!)

1.4v does seem a lot of v for 4.4ghz tbf

your probably running a fixed cpu voltage aswell rather than utilising intel speedstep, that would give you much lower idle temps atleast

at a rough guess you should be aiming for around 1.25-1.32v for 4.4ghz/4.5ghz

unless you have a real dog of a cpu

what motherboard? learn to clock through cpu/offset or dvid so it clocks down in speed/cpu voltage at idle

Thanks a lot, will have another go in a couple days when I go to my friends again.

I'm a bit rusty as my i7-4790k goes to 4.4GHz by itself so haven't bothered playing around for a couple years!
