Hi guys,

My fiancée's PC has been BSODing a lot recently, and it turns out her (Intel stock) CPU cooler had fallen off (!!) her processor and was resting on her graphics card. Eureka! There we go. Obvious issue sorted.

Reseated the cooler, PC started running fine again, temps staying at acceptable levels.

She installed Final Fantasy XIV, only for her PC to start BSODing again after about 3 or 4 minutes of the game running. PC wouldn't start up again for a few minutes. Literally nothing happened when the power was turned on.

I had a look in the BIOS and her CPU temp was at 87oC and rising. This was only after a couple of minutes of the system crashing. I exited and turned off the system when it reached the 95oC mark, which it did within a matter of 15 seconds or so!

Is her CPU damaged? Is the cooler damaged? The old thermal paste was carefully removed and a fresh layer applied before the CPU cooler was reseated. This seemed to fix it. Place the PC under strain, and it turns out it wasn't a good enough fix.

The next thing I'm going to do for her is buy a new CPU HSF, but she's worrying that the CPU has been damaged and tbh, the thought is on my mind, but surely if the CPU itself was damaged, the system wouldn't start up at all?

Which good value for money HSF would you guys recommend? I don't really want to spend more than £25, so what options do I have which fall under that price category?

Cheers :)

P.S.
Motherboard is an MSi Z77A-G43, graphics card is an MSi 6850, primary HDD is an OCZ Agility 3 60GB SSD. The system is also cooled by 4 BitFenix spectre 120mm fans.

I wouldn't say CPU is damaged but the Intel cooler isn't very good,I'd say the mounting pins are worn or not clamping the heatsink down tight enough hence the high temps, get one with a backplate something like the EVO 212 cooler

No, it comes with a ring attachment that fits against the motherboard, which is secured with pushpins. Has to be better than the Intel method!
