Hi all,

I am considering a Intel i5-3570K as a possible upgrade from my AMD Phenom II 1090T. However, never had a build where I have used Intel before so I am trying to gauge whether this would be a good option.

1) Really only use my PC for gaming (mostly Battlefield 3) tho odd browsing and watching of movies etc.

2) Running a MSI GTX 670 OC and feel this maybe being held back by the CPU.

3) Also looking at the MSI Z77 MPower board.

I guess I am just trying to gain some feedback on whether this is a good decision. I have seen all sorts of comparisons etc and the i5 is a lot better but would it be worth waiting for the Haswell, tho cost of them might price me out anyway.

Thanks for all the replies and it's something that has been bugging me whether to wait or not.

My current 990FXA-UD3 and Phenom II 1090T I feel is hurting my 670 for sure largely to do with the 990 only being PCI 2.0 not 3.0 and the processor being well not the best. I have been asked to build a machine for a relative so I might be sneeky and put the propsed parts from my OP and see what the effects might be.

I am not a hardcore gamer and not after a PC which can run super high frames but one that is solid and last me a good 3 years at least.

Wish I never started this thread now the answers ar really throwing me in every direction.

Huddy what you have said is exactly what I have read which made me think of changing over to IB in the first place.

Decisions, decisions. All you're comments are appreciated thanks.

Well reading thru all the posts and struggling to decide I bit the bullet and went Ivy. I regretted soon as I paid because like at least half of you have said wait for Haswell I was thinking of doing that as well.

However, the 3570K with MSI Z77 MPower are terrific especially when putting my MSI 670 on. I am currently running Battlefield 3 on Ultra settings and getting a minimum of 55 on Caspian Border and not under 60 on any of the AK maps which, was never possible before (yet to try Oman and Sharqi as they were the two maps that impacted my fps originally). But also booting, running normal tasks are so much quicker.

Only little hiccup from the setup was when putting the stock cooler on the CPU. said in the manual wait for a click when pushing the clips thru the MB. Heard the click but being use to having AMD clip on CPU coolers I was a little worried as to whether they had actually gone on securely.

Thanks again to everyone for the input.

Great! Enjoy your new Ivy rig, the 3570 is an awesome CPU. Bin that stock cooler though, get yourself and aftermarket cooler and overclock it, they're built for it and you wont be disappointing with the results.

... did you say "stock cooler"? please tell me it isn't so..

What aftermarket cooler do you guys recommend?

I do quite like the look of the stock cooler tho and on my mobo looks quite neat :)

It has the looks, but not the performance.

If you plan to keep it at stock the stock cooler can handle it no problem. However, even a slight overclock then a aftermarket would be the best route to go :)

Well in all honestly i do plan on keeping it at stock so I will stick with the stock cooler for now. If I ever look into overclocking in the future I will probably look into the Cooler Master Hyper 612S. Any good?

Go with the Alpenföhn K2! Well worth the money, quiet and very cool. Looks awesome too.

Looks huge. How many RAM slots would that cover up?

keeping a 3570K at stock, is a crime against silicon

I am not a hardcore gamer i get 55 to 60 FPS on Battlefield 3 high settings currently and I am more than happy with that. However, I would like cooler temps.

I hit 60'c after about 3 hours solid gaming @ 4.5Ghz with the k2. It's huge but it's sexy and worth it, extremely quiet I think even at full whack. At idle you can't hear my computer, it's lovely. I have low profile RAM and it doesn't block any slots. What RAM do you have?

Btw nvidia cards love an overclocked processor. ;)

I have Corsair Vengeance High Profile so basically I am screwed as I assume it will not ft under any cooler which takes up more than one RAM slot.
