I5 3750K overclock issue

running the i5 3750K with a gigabyte z77-d3h al i have done so far is up the turbo to 40 multiplier so obviously when it boosts it goes to 4gig.

i had it overclocked previously to 4gig but it was with the other multiplier option, but again the chip still ran at 1.6 gig then boosted to 4gig when needed.

also it ran prime for 4hours no probs when the multi was set to 40 but i would get to like a 3rd level in l4d2 and pc would lock up with just a high pitched noise coming through speakers not all the time though but was getting more frequent but the likes of bf3 could play for hours no crashes at all.

Also i know people go on about vcore voltages ect but what the diff between the core voltage n the VID atm on the boost overclock my VID is 1.1509v on core temp but on cpu-z core voltage is 1.116v. but when the chip goes into power save mode both values drop to abuot the same number

temps are around the 60°C mark in a room what is 23°C when worked under prime95.

i get the idea that overclocking aint exact science but just wondered if it was an unstable overclock of perhaps something else making l4d2 crash needed a little input from some pro's

thanks a lot hope some 1 can point me in the right direction

did you get a bsod? blue screen of death

any code with it like 0x00000000000101

or 0x0000000000000124?

nope just a lock up and the high pitch scream through speakers then have to hit reset button on tower. no error code either

Also to add the VID when pc idles its 0.8406 in core temp and .816 in cpu-z and it goes down to 1.6GHz

its normal for cpu to downclock at idle

how much ram are you using and what psu?

could try setting cpu vcore to normal and add +0.010v in dvid

leave all turbo ratio's on auto and just set cpu multi to 40x

set vcore voltage response to fast and pwm phase control to extreme performance

if 16gb of memory try 1.10v cpu/vtt,if 8gb of memory leave it on auto

enable x.m.p for your memory if it supports it

I always set vcore voltage response to fast and pwm phase control to extreme performance

whether at stock or overclocked and yes x.m.p will setup the correct ram timings/voltages then see if it's still stable

ok i keep an eye on am pc atm every thing is correct timing and voltages on the ram and cpu going to 4gig which am happy with when gaming and no crashes yet, 'touch wood'

but if i get any more probs i shall pop a reply on here

thanks for the help

Check the event viewer in windows for whea 19 warnings. When i was overclocking my i5 3570k games would crash because i needed to raise the voltage a bit. If you see these errors, raise the vcore a bit until you get no errors and see if it fixes the problem.

don't know what that bsod code is but kernel 41 means the pc shut down unexpectedly

id put it down to your oc settings

yh am going back totally stock settings atm to se if it happens again, searched for the prob and there was hints that it could be psu related and ram related ect
but other forum post put it to programmes runing in back ground and tasks ect but i woulnt know where to start to shut them down

but if it hapens again i know it must be hardware related and can just live with it until something goes pop then i know what it was

Just to add had my 1st crash with every thing on stock settigs not even boost so somthing is wrong some where, same thing though in game high pitched whine noise gotta reset pc with buttong and kernal error 41 in event viewer :(

every thing was at stock, but i have set the vcore to fast, now just a waiting game to see if it does it again, might be another week if it does might be tonight we shal see.

as i said even turned off the boost aswell so its sitting at 3.4Ghz when in use but still powers down when idle.

i did a mem test and no errors so am hoping thats its not my psu starting to go on the blink, some even sujest putting my pc in to wall socket and not into a 4-way adaptor

its hard to say what it is,still could be memory/dram voltage

I used to have some of that memory and I used to use one or two clicks more than 1.5v dram as it wasn't stable enough

set to manufacturer, but a few clicks above rated 1.5v is fine also,it wont damage anything

as for psu idk, apart from try to borrow one to test with

meh done it again the day this time on CS:S never dont it on any other game yet just steam games,

when you perform memtest thing, is it best to use 1 stick at a time and lets it go for a few tests at a time? done t b4 with both in and it was for 1 pass but no errors.

hopefuly see what Bequiet say on emails whether they can take it back to test it or not.

Also gonna turn off that overclock button that comes with the Bequiet PSU's forfot i had that on and its normally just left on

any bsod codes? when it crashes

updated all your drivers? and look in event viewer/custom view to see what it crashes on
