i5 4670k idle usage

I have recently built my first real gaming P.C. I went with the 4670k which was a no brainer 8 gigs of vengence ram and MSI-Z87 G65 psu is corsair tx 650. I am experience weird CPU usage idle just on the desktop for example, running 75 processes and having usage between 20-25%. I find this rather high and also my CPU is throttling speeds ranging from 800MHZ to 3500 I reckon this is a power saving feature on the board I am a new to Haswell my self and maybe this has something to do with the usage. General programs are open too BTW firefox, skype, steam, and origin. Also I have not overclocked yet.this is all running on stock settings.

The CPU clocks down when it's running not so demanding software. Most modern CPU's do this for power saving reasons If you opened up say a game it would be running the max stock clock speed which would be 3.5GHz for your 4670K. Your processor can also turbo so the clock speed could go even higher than that if required.

Thanks for your input but this still doesnt explain the cpu usage which is ay 20-35% when running general programmes
I now understand why the cpu clock drop and rise but would that effect the cpu usage

To find out what is using the most usage you would need to look in your task manager. Something may be consuming excessive amounts of resources. When I had all of the programs you listed open and more on a i5 3570K my usage was around 2-4% when downclocked.

20-25% seems a bit high I've never used skype though maybe that is causing it.

Yeah thats fine ill do a print screen of the task manager and cpu usage when I get home from work thanks for your help

this is a print screen i am not doing much so why would there be a need for so much usage

the load on real temp is saying its at 17% task manager is saying its at 11% the only thing im doing is a skype call which should not be affecting the usage that much
