Hi all,I've had the I5 for a while now and thinking about this upgrade
My maximum CPU I can use on my board is the I7 4790k.
My i5 is oc to 4.2 ghz ..would the i7 be a worthwhile upgrade?
Or would it not make much of a difference.
Thanks for any replies..cheers

Upgrading your gpu would be a far better option.

Of course I don't practice what I preach and did the same albeit from a 4670k. Very few games offer any tangible benefits but I do score higher in benchmarks......;)

Very close at the moment to upgrading to a 1070 or even possibly a 1080 Brazo. Just wondering wether to sell my i5 and upgrade to the i7 mate. I think your correct I don't think (after doing a bit of research) that in games theirs much of a difference between both CPUs ..thanks all

Youd get a very slight gain in games that utilise hyperthreading, of which there arent an awful lot. Also with multi gpu but again in certain situations. For gaming with any modern single card the i5 is still fine.

Thanks Setter, you've confirmed my findings, do you think more and more upcoming titles could use Hyperthreading mate?

Thanks mate..it's certainly given me something to think about. I'm going to see what I can get on flea bay for the i5 and maybe take it from there.

Think im going grab a 1080 first (i currently have no GPU in my system).
Then in a couple of months il grab the I7 4790k
Thanks all

I went from a 4690k to a 4790k I use it for compressing videos etc, so the additional threads do help their. It also helps the fact the i7 at the same volts is a better clocker 4.5ghz on the i5 vs 4.7ghz on the i7 in games I've noticed all threads do get utilized though the performance is around the same though instead of 80-90% cpu usage in some games it's now gone down to around 40-50% so with future games I'd recommend the i7 vs the i5

Thanks for the Info Tommy. Yeah ive just gotta grab me a new card 1st,then hopefully within a month or 2 il grab the i7.
Thanks

Hi guys sorry i forgot about this thread :)
Yep ive noticed a fair speed and smoother gameplay increase since installing the I7 4790K,now ive got it paired with a EVGA 1070 FTW its fantastic.

A great double act :D

Its a Gigabyte z87-hd3 socket 1150.
I got a good price on my i5 ,won a couple of quid on the gee gees and looked at something to tide me over for a bit. I can see the difference in comparing both chips,i believe this i7 paired with the 1070 should see me thru at least the next 18mths what you reckon mate?

Im not planning on upgrading in 18 mths,i said it should see me thru the next 18 months hopefully longer if i can get away with the i7 4790k for a lot longer id be more than happy bud.
I use a U2715H a real beautiful monitor with it all and the EVGA FTW 1070 is a great card.
I got just under £150 for my 2yr old i5..so i got a brand new top CPU for 150 quid, that doesn,t seem a bad price to me?

There's nothing wrong in doing that as he avoided having to upgrade everything else, When he does do his next move it'll also include the need to buy new ram as well as a motherboard and possibly an OS so doing what he did makes perfect sense as he's now sporting the top of the range Haswell chip which will continue to handle the latest games for years to come thanks to the extra threads and the likelihood that titles on the new api's will take advantage of them...

If someone was buying everything ie: cpu, motherboard & ram then yes it makes sense to buy the latest generation of hardware ie Skylake, But when you already own most of it no, Skylake is not a massive leap over the Devils canyon i7 and not worth the outlay of having to replace everything mentioned hence why I haven't done it and probably why you haven't too..

Cheers Nashathedog..You put it way better than i ever could.
Thats exactly my reason i purchased the I7 Canyon chip
