i5-6600K 3.9GHz only showing as 3.5GHz?

Hi all,

Been out of the loop for a long while but I recently bought this CPU for my new build:

Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - OEM

I've got the system up and running and all seems fine, except that the CPU is coming up as 3.5GHz rather than the advertised 3.9. Is there something I'm doing wrong at all?

Other relevant hardware:
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz

Processor Base Frequency 3.5 GHz
Max Turbo Frequency 3.9 GHz

Get something monitoring it, put some stress on the CPU, watch the core frequency increase.

When idling the speed will be low to save power.
If you use all cores it will go to the base speed (3.5 GHz).
If you're using fewer* than all the cores it will go to the turbo speed (3.9 GHz).

*I can't remember exactly how many, 1? 2?

download CPU-Z and monitor the clock speed when youre doing stuff; you'll see it change from idle to full load.
