I'm going to build a new system in January and I can't decide between the i5 or the i7. The system will be for gaming mostly. I want to try and run games at their highest settings so I'll probably be using a 970 or maybe a 980 with it. If I go i7, I'll never have to upgrade for a long time. Any advice?

I just got an i5-6600K and it's brilliant, and I even hadn't time yet to overclock. So for gaming go for it, for heavy rendering etc, take the i7 if the prices have come down then. Its current pricing is mental.

What resolution will you be playing at? For max settings at let's say 1440p I'd take the 980Ti. I have a 970 at 1080p at the moment and it doesn't allow all settings maxed in certain games, many I can do but not all, and I expect that to be fewer at 1440p.

6600k

The i5 will be as fast in most games and much cheaper. In the games that make good use of more than 4 cores you'd be better going x99 (5820k) than 6700k anyway.

I dunno, I7s seem to be starting to make a difference in some recent games. If I turn off the extra cores on mine there is a noticable drop in performance now in some things.

If you need i7 go X99 man. Much better perf for similar cash.

Cyber Monday check out the X99 deals too may be the odd bargain to be had ;)
