Witch one would be better for gaming ?
The i5 has better per core rating but overall they are both the same.
Is it worth changing the socket if my mobo supports Xeon X5660

For gaming the 6600k will be the faster chip, you get more cores with the 5660 but at the moment not a lot of games make use of more than 4 cores. This may change with DX12. Obviously the 5650 will cost a lot less than a whole new platform.

Hi, i am planning to get gtx 970 and wait till end of the year for the new pascal gpu's and the new intel chips and planing to build a new rig for next few years then.

Hmm, I can see X5650 going right now for £54 inc postage. I have a X5670 which I am using at 4.6Ghz but I'm not sure if it's worth double that of the X5650. Stock clocks are 2.93Ghz vs 2.6Ghz. Most X5650 do 4Ghz at a breeze and 4.2-4.4 if you spend a little time with them.

hmmm thanks something to consider.

I bet it doesn't destroy the Xeon at anything approaching high resolution where you're GPU bound. Maybe if you're running a couple of 980ti yes but not a 670

Also it could not be any easier of a decision. Get on eBay, spend 50 quid, see it it works for you, if not sell it on and hook yourself up with the 6600. To not try it out is madness. Probably get 4.2 with minimal effort.

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense, i got an gtx 970 on its way in few days.
And im on the look for the xenon on ebay.
And the resolutions i play is just below 1080p, 1680x1050 thats my monitor.

I think the biggest thing here is that the X56xx is an amazing upgrade for those of us that are not quite willing to shell out on another PC yet. The ability to increase our current performance for £50 is what we actually care about while we continue to evaluate our options and wait for the new CPUs in Q2.

If nothing else it is a fun little learning exercise for us :)

Agreed.
