do the retail heatsinks from intel still come with thermal paste pre applied? an unboxing on youtube of an i7 920 suggests not

TBH I'd rather pick my nose and smear it all over the CPU than use the gunk that Intel supply. Quality TP is not just for the overclocking enthusiasts have some heart for your CPU

Right now every pound matters to me. When I start getting more money, I'll then purchase extras like third party heatsinks and thermal compound

Thermal paste on retail is on the heatsink, OEM will not have any at all.

HSF like the Arctic cooler is good asit has mx-2 pre applied.

I'm so confused. So if I bought the retail version it is necessary to apply thermal compound on the cpu?

I had my i7 920 d0 retail box but intel never put any pre applied nor no thermal compound at all. Just the Cpu processor chipset, stock fan and intel manual note.

Thermal compound never comes pre applied on CPUs only on some heatsinks. If the heatsink already has it on you dont need any more applied to the CPU, if it doesnt then you will need to use your own.
