I was waiting for the new Haswell-E CPU's to come out in order to determine where my next upgrade would be. Since the DDR4 RAM is so expensive I simply can't get one of these new CPUs.

So I'm looking at getting an i7 4790k (Devil's Canyon). Will this be a big enough leap from my first gen i5 750?

Looking at some 3dMark Fire Strike results the upgrade wouldn't help much in gaming

I might be better off getting a GTX 970 or 980

I went from my old i5 760 @4.2Ghz to the 4670K I have now and I have to admit that I was dissapointed with the upgrade. Maybe I was expecting too much. Benchies have decent boosts but day to day use and gaming the gains were small. The only good thing was that I sold my 760 and P55D-E Pro while they were still worth a decent price so the outlay wasn't as big as it would be now.

Yeah I was thinking the same, can't believe my 5 year old CPU is still holding up for gaming to date. Think I'll just get a GTX970 for now.

I have to agree as i recently did a similar upgrade an 860 to a 4790 and it is faster but not that much ! So i put extra and faster ram in 8GB 1600 MHz to 16GB 2666 MHz

So overall it is faster but i am not sure it was worth it but at least my system is up to date ! I could have went 5820 and ddr4 but i don't think its worth the money

Ive had i5 and i7 ivybridge and been through 1 4770k and 2 4790k's so far. Tbh both platforms havent given signifigant gaming improvements over my old i7 920 with one gpu. Only thing they offered was a load more heat. Performance with multi gpu is better though.

More heat than the 920? Oh wow i would expect after so many generations that it would be better.

In other thoughts i would think that today's chipsets can handle better multigpu and also SSDs faster (still on Sata 2 here with an SSD on it). But day to day i wouldnt expect much since most of the games are gpu bound, and also you can get a nice 770 for peanuts which is more than enough to play with all eye candy.

The Hasswell-e platform is helping a lot the professionals, not us gamers. Extra cores are very handy and now very affordable compared to how it used to be. So a new start in the field of editing can actually afford a nice rig that would make them good money.

Almost. A single GTX 780 can't handle some of the latest titles smoothly with everything cranked up to max. The GTX 770 is still a decent card though and you can find them pretty cheap... Preferably get a 4GB version though, especially if there's any interest in SLI ;)

I meant 970 not 770 :D

OP don't just look at benches but look at what extra would you get from the new platform. Would the m.2 help you for example? Would the default 4ghz help you i know it would for me rather than having my old processor at 4 ghz from 2.8. And if there is any interest in SLI then sure. But you could wait one or 2 more generations. Your cpu is still going strong and the money are worth more spent on a gpu if you don't have a good one. And 970 can be better than a 780 and oced can go 780ti territories. That is wow for the money and 4gb as well if you consider higher resolutions. THumbs up for the gpu and you won't need a new mobo yet

DEFINITELY GET THE 970 :)

Got the 970 and it has made a major difference in games except for BF4 which is more CPU dependant I guess. I've still got my eye on a Devils Canyon and if I see one going cheap will snap it up as the Firestrike mark goes up by 2000 points.

Thing is I don't know which motherboard to get with it. The Asus MAXIMUS VII RANGER looks good.

EDIT: Just seen this bundle: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K is that motherboard good? Will it be good enough for SLI GTX 970s?

Yes and yes, though SLI will run at X16 X8.

Hmmm seen another bundle: Asus Z97-K - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle which is £100 cheaper. Having looked at the reviews of the i5 4690k it's neck and neck with the i7 4790k for gaming:

Is the Asus Z97-K a decent motherboard?

I upgraded from a mildly overclocked i5 750 to a mildly overclocked i7 4770k. Computer felt quite a bit quicker especially Visual Studio compile times. Also helped IO as I had SATA3 SSD's limited to SATA 2 before upgrade.

It's neck and neck until you hit a game like BF3 or BF4 that uses more cores.

To add a little more confusion, like Crysis 3 Metro LL seems to change things up depending on the level you are on. So for example in Crysis 3 on certain levels (Welcome to the jungle for example) I see 8 core use. However, on other levels (the train depot for example) it does not use all 8 cores.

I would not buy anything less than an I7 now. Pretty much all of the recently released and current games all use those threads.

I won't get you too excited, 6/12 and 8/16 are still not mainstream and thus, support is going to be crap still but at least the consoles are on 8 now, making it easier for devs to support PC cores without actually doing any hard work.

Having done some quick research I think Im going to go for this combo:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail

Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Total: £325.54

Could sell my old mobo and CPU for around £100

EDIT: ALXAndy thanks for that but the i7 4790k is much more expensive. Is there another i7 I could go for instead?

You could possibly try and pick up an I7 to fit your motherboard?
The 4770k and 4790k are the unlocked ones for a z97 motherboard. Your best off with the 4790k though.

Could get an i7 880 but they are like gold dust. Also it's not much of an improvement over my i5 750.
