So after 6+ years of rock solid hassle free performance my motherboard is starting to play up (MSI P55-GD80).
It's quite simply the best combo I've owned however I've had a few instances of it just shutting down for no reason, a few errors on boot and now a couple of SATA ports forgetting that they exist, one of them being my Windows SSD port!

So what do I move to without smashing the bank? What offers the best bang for buck currently?
I'm not bothered about having loads of the latest grunt and I have zero brand loyalty, I'm all about value for money!

I use my machine solely for Gaming @ 1440p and Photo editing.
Rest of the machine is 2x 780's SLI, 32gb DDR3, 4x SSD's, 1x 3TB.

Another option to keep cost's down would be to buy a bundle from the MM. A 47770k/Z87 Sabretooth/8Gb ram bundle just went for £250. There has been quite a few Haswell bundles coming up for sale lately.

Cheers guys, I guess the AMD's aren't cutting it?
How would one of the 8 core chip compare to my current i5 750?

AMD are so far behind it's just ridiculous. Hopefully whenever they launch Zen it will allow them to fight back again but at the moment I wouldn't touch them. The motherboard chipsets are ancient and the cpu's are innefficient. If you want best bang for buck pick up a Haswell bundle in the MM.

Comparison between your 750 and a FX8350 (keep in mind the 8350 has a significant clock speed advantage over yours) here. FX8350 against a 6600k here. The 6600k destroys it in the vast majority of tests.

2nd hand X79 with a 3930K is another option. Boards can be had for less than £100 and CPUs are around £150.

So 6 hyper threaded cores and a board for less than a 6700K.

RAM will be reusable too.

A friend has offered me a 4820k and Gigabyte Gaming 5 SLI motherboard for £200, understand I'd need to add some DDR4 but would it be worth it?

Are you sure about the motherboard model because a 4820k is X79 and there is no Gigabyte Gaming 5 SLI in that chipset. There's a X79 UD5 though. It's also DDR3 on X79.

Ooh maybe I'm wrong on the CPU then.
The board is a Gigabyte X99M Gaming 5 and is deffo LGA 2011 and DDR4, couldv'e sworn he said i7 4820k though its perfectly possible I'm entirely wrong!.

I'll speak to him tomorrow.
