i5 750 vs i5 2500k

If you had the choice between an i5 750 for £90 and an i5 2500k at new price of £163 which would you go for?

Is the newer i5 a lot faster than the older model?

Thanks for the help.

Forgot to mention that my friend is deciding between the both and value for money is important to him. He also wants a processor for gaming and not much else.

Just to check, he knows they need different motherboards, right? Just the way you phrased it makes me wonder whether he's got the rest of the PC and is dithering on CPU :)

Suggests the i5 is significantly faster at stock - and bear in mind that it'll overclock further as well. Lot of the recent ones seem to very comfortably hit 4.5GHz, which a 750 is just not going to do.

Whether it's £73 better is up to your friend - but I personally would say yes.
 
No he's not got any parts yet and he knows different boards will be needed. I also thought the fact you can push an i5 750 to 4ghz would mean it wouldn't be far behind?
 
Got another vote for the 2500k.
Its performance and oc'ing ability speak for itself, its also on a socket which will house the next Intel "tick" - ivybridge. there is no upgrade path for the 1156, i5-750/760.

To my knowledge, the 750 is by no means a bad chip, and compares favourably with Phenom II quads (similar generation). But it is about 2 years older than the 2500k. The latter will clock higher by about 7-800 MHz, and has better instructions-per-clock, meaning that those MHz will be more meaningful than a linear comparison would indicate.

Also the 750 is second hand - it's out of warranty, and you don't know how hard a life it's had AND the motherboard is a complete dead end. There will never be an upgrade for an 1156 board, but buying a 2500K and a Z68 based socket 1155 board leaves you open for next year's Ivy Bridge CPUs should you want an upgrade.

My choice in your friend's place would probably be the 750 only if I could get it for £50 or less, otherwise 2500K. Just don't feel that an old, non-new chip is worth the asking price and the penalty of buying a dead end motherboard.

If he has no parts yet then definitely go for the 2500k, as someone else has mentioned, there's no upgrade path available on the 1156 socket, not to mentioned the 2500k has better performance.
 
Yeah I bought a i5 760 a couple of months before sandybridge, before I heavily got into OC'ing (terrible addiction), great lil chips the older gens, but im stuck upgrade wise will need a new mobo when I want a chip upgrade
