Hi guys, pc has been a tad sluggish this week so i loaded up resource monitor and it only showed a single core. Loaded core temp which also only shows a single core. Stuck the cpu under load and no change. Reset everything to defaults and no change. Took the cpu out and checked it over and there is no visible damage, same with the mobo and socket. Reseated everything and still no change. Tried with a single stick of ram and just the ssd and gpu connected and no change.

The only thing i have changed in the past couple of weeks is going from a GTX480 to a 6950 flashed to a 6970 along with the change of drivers. Surely this would not have anything to do with this problem? Anybody have any suggestions?

on the plus side you probably have the fastest single core cpu around :S

all i can suggest if you have wiped the bios etc is to try in a different pc, or borrow another cpu.

also, does the bios say how many cores the cpu has? maybe a corrupt windows installations

If you load command prompt and run "systeminfo", does it report back that the OS Build Type is "Multiprocessor Free"?

If so, then at least you have an MP kernel, in which case it's probably a BIOS setting where the cores have been disabled.

Did the cmd thing and it does say Multiprocessor Free. Been through the bios several times now. All cores are enabled although the bios does'nt say how many cores there are even at post which i am sure it did before. Cpu-z also shows just 1 core 1 thread.

Either the board has a problem or the cpu (highly unlikley) has a problem. Going to have to try to get a cheap board to test the cpu i think. Really don't want to upgrade before Haswell!!

If you boot from a Windows Setup DVD, and once at the disk partition/selection screen press SHIFT and F10 to load a command prompt, then type taskmgr and hit enter.

Does this task manager show more than one CPU?

makesure these boxes are unticked(number of processors)

You sir are a star. Have a beer!! Back to 4 cores again. No of processors was ticked. Why on earth would that change itself though because i have'nt been in there?

On a side note i think i may still have a problem developing. Had another look at the board during dinner and found this. Take a look at the middle cap. That was'nt there originally. It's like a dried liquid gone powdery. If it's a burst cap why would it spread that way and not drip downwards?

It doesn't actually look like it has bursted. According to Asus's blurb, the design uses all solid Japanese capacitors - I'm sure solid caps can fail too but maybe they don't burst?

Anyway, had a look at TechPowerUp review of your board:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/P7P55D-E_PRO/4.html
and there are reasonably good shots of exactly that area (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/P7P55D-E_PRO/images/cpu_led.jpg) and there seems to some silk-screening or something around those caps in those photos. Of course, if you're sure it wasn't there before it may indeed be going bad...

just clear the powder off with a cotton bud dipped in alcahol, wouldnt be too hard to get a new cap soldered on,might be fine though

Thanks for the help guys, it's why i love this place. :):):)

It's working fine again now and i have cleaned off the area around the cap so we will see how it goes.
