So I have been looking around for a i5 760 and it all looks good (being in my price range).

But how much of a upgrade would it be on the performance of my system? I currently have a Q8300, its a few years old but it's decent enough.

However, I have recently started noticing that the ol' trusty chip is starting to look a bit dated when playing recent games.

So is it worth a upgrade?

Closest comparison I could find:

Q8400 v i5 760

You'd be needing a new motherboard and CPU cooler as well.

You could try overclocking the Q8300.

Is Sandybridge not in your price range?

May I ask how you have 6GB of RAM in a dual channel system? 4+2, 2+2+2, 2+2+1+1?

I went from a Q9300 (2.5ghz) so almost the same as the Q8300 to a sandy bridge setup (i7 2600k), the performance increase was pretty huge, especially in encodes and gaming. Some games saw as much as a 40fps increase with the same cards (pair of 9800GTX+'s). While some video encodes went from 180fps rendering to as high as 490fps (granted HT helps allot with this).

As said though you could probably stretch a little more life out of the chip if you OC it, this wasn't an option for me, as, well the damn thing wouldn't OC at all.

The memory MIGHT run in dual channel, it is possible from some intel chipsets if I remember rightly. Though I would say its unlikely, usually memory in matching banks HAS to be the same capacity/speed
