I currently have a Gigabyte P55 board, i5 760@4ghz and 2 x 4gb Kingston Hyper X grey series (DDR3 1600)

Would upgrading to something like the bundle below allow me to use my existing memory and PCI Xonar Essense ST soundcard?

Would I also be able to use / modify my Arctic freezer pro 7 rev 2 to go over the CPU? I briefly read on another forum someone had used a different socket cooler on his CPU and it worked fine

Seems like a reasonable upgrade for the money if I can use my sound card and memory in it. Then sell my i5 760 & P55 board to cover some of the cost

What other hardware do you have?

I also have an i5 760, and the cost to upgrade to an i5 4690K doesn't seem worth it for the performance benefit - compared to upgrading my GPU to a 780 as I plan to in the next month (currently have a 460 gtx)

2 x EVGA GTX670, Crucial M4 SSD, Xonar Essense.

I was thinking the same actually but I am a few generations behind now (4?) and got the motherboard and cpu in 2010 so also 4 years. My current setup seems 'fine' but I usually upgrade to mid range setup every few years whilst I get still get reasonable money for my current stuff.

If I get the bundle for £247 and hopefully sell my current i5 & board for £100 then £150 for another 4 years use isn't too bad - plus it will bring extra life to my SSD, USB 3.0 etc.

Thanks RJC for confirming re mount holes

I've recently moved from a Socket 1156 i7 875k @ 4ghz to a 4790k @ 4.4ghz and cannot tell you how underwhelmed I am. Honestly I feel like I've totally wasted my money as in games, lightroom and photoshop I can't tell the difference.

I'm sure there are plenty of perceivable benefits there but they obviously don't apply to me, I wish I'd simply gone for better cooling now and tried to squeeze more out of the 875k.

I think this holds true, it might be 10-20% faster max. Better to save your money and wait a few more gens or jump up to an i7, going from i5 -> i5 right now is pretty sideways. Most of what Intel has been focused on is iGPUs and getting power lower, not extremely useful for gaming, and they don't overclock aswell these days.
