i5 760 vs X3430

I have a 4c 4t i5 760 2.8GHz that is running stable (but hot) at 3.6GHz. I have been offered a xenon 3430 which is also 4c 4t 2.4GHz so basically the same chip but lower base clock. But I understand that 1156 xenons overclock better and would run cooler? Is that true?

Generally yes i think so. only the really good chips make the Xenon cut because they need to run as cool and as efficiently as possible 24/7 in servers.

That's the theory anyway.

Interesting, I've literally just ordered one of these off an auction site to put in a budget build for my girlfriend's cousin. Had a spare 1156 motherboard laying around and rather than use the i3 already on it I managed to find an X3430 for the grand total of £16.99! Absolute steal.

Xeon chips are good overclockers if your board is capable enough! Have an X5650 in my main rig and it runs super cool at 3.7GHz.

I went for it in the end- a tenner from a gumtree-er I've had good past sales with. It doesn't want to downclock when idling though which is a bit annoying so its sat at 2.8 (turbo) all the time... Back to the bios I go

Edit- low power states turned off due to the CPU swap, so I've knocked 13c off the idle and 20c so far off the load temps, at the same clocks of 3.4 GHz (not 3.6 like I thought )
