I5 8400 upgrade?

Hi all,

I'm interested in knowing if it's worth upgrading from an i5 8400 for gaming or will it be silly money for not much additional performance?

I'm running a 3070 and game at 1440p.

I have the feeling my cpu is a bottleneck for the GPU.

Any advice would be appreciated please, cheers!

That's not gaming though is it? Which is what I'm looking to upgrade for.

Wow suddenly a lot of information appeared on this thread, thanks guys.

So yes I'm not happy with performance, I checked the CPU utilisation and it's nearly always near enough 100%. I game in 2k, play a variety of games. Some games it's worse(new world is bad).

It doesn't sound like I'm going to get much of an upgrade unless I spend a lot of money so I will just have to put up with it for a while.

Thanks all, some interesting reading. Just to be clear my main question was about upgrading the cpu, I have no intention to sell the 3070.

My main point was if it's financially worth it. I'm only interested if I would get a decent increase in FPS in games (I don't care about cpu benchmark scores) and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

It sounds like it's not worth it with my current motherboard and I should possibly wait to see what this next generation of CPUs from intel will be like. I've got around 600-700ish to buy CPU, ram, mobo.

I'm thinking of splashing the cash on an i5 12600k with DDR 5. Any ideas of how much more performance in games this would give me?
