I'm building a gaming PC for a mate at a budget of £800 and I'm undecided on the CPU and GPU combo.

What would be more "bang for buck", going with an i5 and a R9 290 or going with an i7 and a R9 280?

Also, suggestions on PSU? I personally prefer working with modular's in an attempt to keep the case as neat and tidy as possible. I've been looking at the Corsair's (mine has been spot on for years now) and the Seasonic M12II, but the SuperFlower 550w @ £50 looks like a bargain?

Cheers! :D

The i5 and 290 will be a better gaming machine than a i7 and 280

Any good 550W+ PSU will be fine.

Hmm, I'm in the exact same boat. Currently my basket is the following but am thinking of going the i5/290 route.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£43 Saving** £343.98
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 280 TurboDUO 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £149.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
1 x Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Red (HX21C11BRK2/8-OC) £67.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
1 x Xigmatek Alfar Midi Tower Case - All Black £44.99
1 x OcUK Value 5mtr HDMI Male - Male Cable (CDLHD-305) £5.99
Total : £747.52 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The only thing putting me off is people saying the i7 is more future proof if they start designing games to make full use of the i7 capabilities.

lol, yeah the case sucks but it needs to be under 460mm to fit under a section of my desk. So that thing was the best I could find with cable management and half decent looking butttons.
