Ive had my i5 for just under a week, running it on a msi gd80 with 4gb geil ultra i had it clocked to 4ghz (200x20 & 1.325v) idle 40c load 75c under a noctua and it was running sweet but then i started to get alittle paranoid about my cheapo PSU (some generic 750watt pos) thinking that if that goes boom its going to take most of my pc with it, and having just spent a small fortune upgrading the core parts i wouldnt be happy

so luckly i managed to source a pc power and cooling 860w PSU from the members market and with a bit of luck it will be here on tuesday, so to be on the safe side ive set my bios to "optmised defaults" so its now running at stock

my question is , being a avid gamer do i now need to alter anything in the bios to increase performance of the cpu without overclocking it and stressing the PSU ? i noticed cpu z is now registering the core speed as 1200mhz (speedstep?) , will this jump up once i enter a 3d application such as a game ? is this "turbo" mode set to enabled automatically or does that need setting in the bios ?

any advice much appreciated :)

The cpu speed is low due to speedstep like you mentioned and will increase when stressed, hopefully Turbo mode should be enabled but pop into the BIOS to double check and whilst there check your memory timmings are correct.

yeah i ran prime95 and the core speed jumped upto 2.8ghz is there a way to increase the speed increase so to speak ?

when ive fit the new PSU i think i like the idea of the cpu running very low for desktop/browsing use (1.2ghz) but it jumping right upto 4ghz when gaming, is that even possible ?

I have not seen any software which can do that, unless another member has seen something.
When overclocking you could leave speedstep on, which will still drop the multiplier,

Ive just been playing in bios trying that , overclocking but leaving speedstep enabled it didnt seem to work it would just boot up at the overclocked settings, what i have noticed now is that even though i have selected optimized defaults again the pc is booting at 2.8ghz instead of the 1.2ghz previously

confusing :(

EDIT: never mind its fixed itself , ran prime 95 for a few minutes and when i closed that down the speed dropped down to 1.2ghz :)

Yea, Im running at 4.2GHz with speedstep on and it doesnt drop down. Read somewhere that if you leave the voltages on auto it will drop the speeds, but as you've manually overridded them it sticks at that. So you basically get the 21x multiplier but it does nothing power saving wise lol

And it may of been booting at 2.8 as when the system is first turned on its busy loading and checking things etc, if you leave it a little while it should just drop down by itself... I imagine

I think im going to have to turn speedstep off , ive just been playing cod waw and it was quite laggy i checked cpuz and the cores where only running at 1.35ghz so its not increasing enough which made it unplayable :(
