Is it normal for a new chip to show small marks on the contact pads as though it's been in a motherboard? Is this from intel testing? Or have I been sold a used processor?

Thanks,
Philip

It was an OEM version, so just in a small cardboard box with a bit of foam. Should there be a plastic protective backing plate for the processor too? I seem to remember there being one on my e6300.

Poor old Barton, a fine companion for many years.... ;)

When you say contact pads, are you referring to the small metal wings that the clamp rests on, to hold the cpu down?

I bought a retail i5 750 and didnt have any marks on these areas and then I thought I hadn't seated the cpu correctly (although I had) and opened the clamp, there were graze marks where the clamp was sitting on the edges of the heatspreader

It didnt come with any back plate, it was just sitting bare in a small clear moulded plastic folding box, as in the pic, but the lid has been chopped off by the look of it.

Ah, there are no marks on the heatsink where you indicate. The same small marks are on the copper connection pads on both sides. As only the reverse heatsink side is used in a consumer socket, I assume this is just from intel testing. Just being overly cautious. Many thanks for the info.
