Hey guys, i've posted a few threads here asking for advice on builds but this one is for my mate. I managed to convinced him not to spends loads on a Dell (he wants it for gaming) and said i would build it for him myself. We both finally decided on an i5. I have a few questions however, every 1600 MHz RAM for the i5 is rated at 1.65V however on Gigabytes main site every P55 motherboard says "4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory". I'm aware that if you get 1600MHz RAM for i5 you have to set the timings yourself however if i set it to 1.65V wouldnt i damage the motherboard or something since EVERY P55 Gigabyte motherboard says "4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory". See here under specifications for example.

Anyone who knows their stuff or has an i5 shed some light on this? Cheers fellas.

The memory wil run fine, you will need to increase the volatge manually within the BIOS, I have the X58 UD5 which shows DDR3 @ 1.5V, Even look at other chipsets they say 1.8v but you can install memory @ 2.1v ~.

my dual channel ddr3 is at 1.65 and their rated for between 1.5 to 1.65. you should be safe as long as you dont exceed that.

the ram i have chosen for my i5 runs at 1.9v :O

and my mobo says 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory

guess i should just some lower voltage ram?

The 1.5v listing from Gigabyte is probably just them conforming to JEDEC standards. Remember, most of the RAM available at OCUK is non-standard, bespoke stuff (at least in the eyes of JEDEC).

IIRC, as long as you don't run your RAM above 1.65v you will be fine.
