I5 cpu - integrated graphics?

Hi people, a quick question about I5 integrated graphics - does it work with the PCI express graphics card to smooth bottlenecking or is it a graphics chip on die so to speak? looked through the forums for any information and stopped after page 5.
any help or information would be appreciated.

As I understand it, the GPU sits next to the CPU die as opposed to normal intergrated solutions which are part of the mobo.

Yes its intergrated into the CPU. As Jimben says it sits nect to the CPU core under the heatshield. You need an H55/H57 mobo to make use of the intergrated GFX tho. Also, not all i5 chips have the GFX as well, the i5 750 dosent.

In the future the graphics core will take care of all floating point workloads. Probably through the use of something like open CL and its successors.

For now they are not really useful unless you dont want a graphics card. and personally i would prefer IGPs from AMD/nVIDIA

Adding graphics to the CPU processor chip is really bad idea! I don't trust this way. I prefer to have my own seperator PCI-Express graphic card.

Nothing stopping you running a PCI-E GPU with the i5. In practice it's very similar to having onboard graphics on the motherboard.

Okay, let me point this way - for example I brought washing and dryer machine (all in one) and if the dryer breakdown, I cannot use washing! Now, the cpu had graphic on it, but, if the graphic had died, will the cpu still alive or will it be dead ?

Except in this case you just replace the CPU and not the entire motherboard.

Let's also remember the ICs don't normally just break (unless given over 5 years of continuous heavy loading), compared to discrete componants they are VASTLY more reliable.

I think it may end up working well for for laptops and the likes, but will never be much use in the next 5 years for gaming machines.

I read an article on it the other day and the main points were that the cpu itself is great and overclocks very well, but the graphics part is really poor.

Maybe amd will make a better one.

They are not high end CPUs technically so its not surprising that they come with "good enough" graphics for most users.

In theory yes. It doesn't seem to affect the overclockability of Clarksdale though. We need to see a quad core implementation to fully assess this though.

I think what he was saying is that they aren't much use now and won't be for at least the next 5 years in which time integrated GPUs may have developed to the point where they are feasible for gaming.
