hello.. im quite undecided as to whether i really need the i7s hyperthreading.. i would say i mostly game but i do 3d rendering and audio production quite often...im sure i could survive without the extra hyperthreading as i used to have to wait like a day or so for a box to render on the amiga ;p

i have a budget of about £600ish ..

im considering the i5 760 bundle clocked @4.0ghz and possibly a gtx460

i thought i would get the bundle as the individual components r only marginally cheaper seperate and i would have piece of mind for it to be stable etc.

i currently have an athlonx2 4200+ and 8800gt 2gig mem

and im struggling alittle bit now to play the latest games..specially blackops was unplayable (think a lot of ppl have problems with it but im sure a patch wouldnt improve it that much)

im not really bothered about SLI or anything either.

i already have a 650w psu but not sure on the make..would that
be enough for the oc bundle and gtx460 do u think ?

would i see a massive improvement over my current system or no!!?

i keep seeing ppl sayin to hold off if possible for sandy bridge so the
prices will come down but i cant see it having a drastic affect?!?
plus i kinda of want a new system nowish..sodit heh :)

thanks in advance
:)

p.s i prob spend about 90% of my waking time on the bloody puter and have
since the days of pong if that helps either way hehe ;p

Get the i5 760. Cheaper, and generally recognised to be the best gaming CPU around atm.

However, don't buy the bundle, buy it yourself and save yourself around £50 :p

That money saved there can then go to getting a HD6870, or if you're feeling adventurous, a HD6950!

650W would be enough, but only if its a decent brand. If you can find that out it will be helpful.

If you give us a budget and a list of stuff you need (presume you can re-use case, HDDs etc) then we can spec you a little something something :p

thanks for replyin so quick :)

i didnt realize it would b £50 odd saved.. i suppose thats worth buying seperately then..especially as im unemployed atm hehe..

i was just concerned about the oc as ive never venture into that area b4..i dont know why as ive been fixing puters constantly since forever and am a programmer so i know abit :) il admit im abit out of the loop of late tho as getting older im seem to b leaning toward being not too bothered about how things r done and just want the results kinda thing.. i still like 2 get under the bonnet but not as much..

so u think an hd6870/6950 instead of gtx460? i wouldnt say im a fanboy but iv always been an nvidia/amd guy ..it s only now i realize id like the extra number crunchingness of an intel..

i have £500 atm and was just goin to get the cpu, board, ram now and use my 8800gt until i save for a new gfx card..

im hoping i can reuse my case+psu(il find brand) hdd etc

cheers man :)

EDIT : had to take the psu out just to find the tiny hidden brand label ;p

from what info it has on it :

evo labs 650w switching power supply
intel 2.2 version 4

voltage
115/230
+3.3 +5 +12
36 38 38

cur
8/4a
-12v +5vsp
0.5a 3a

hope this helps ?!

sorry for double post.. just been reading up on the HD6850 and it seems (with obv risk) its possible to flash its bios with a 6870 bios unlocking the extra shader cores.. effectively making it ab hd6870 .. do u think its worth having a go !!? saying that either way i think i will take your advice on goin ati over the gtx460 just by what ive been reading..

so i think im goin to go for the seperates of the i5 oc bundle and try oc'n myself and probably the hd6850 @ £214.99 when i can afford it

now it would b nice to know if my (unheardof) evo labs 650w would b up to the job ;p

thanks :)

Personally never heard of evo labs. So might be worth getting a new PSU, as its not worth the risk

For £500, I would be looking at: (Note how the parts separately - and with a better cooler are actually £90 cheaper than the bundle!)

Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £140.99
(£119.99) £140.99

Titan Fenrir Evo CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1366/AMD K8/AM2/AM2+/AM3) £31.98

Slightly over-budget, but you could swap the cooler out for this to bring it back within budget :)

ahh thanks man.. i kinda feel bad for u goin and lookin for me..but like me i guess yr 1 of the good 1s :)

i didnt realize i could get all that for the £500 budget..im not bothered about the £7.05 over budget hehe im sure i can scrape that from sumwer :)

could i really potentially do that much damage with the unknown psu like?!?! i wont take the chance anyhoot..

reet i shall get that lot ordered then..iv been recearchin for far too long now and me little old peepers r all twitchy and blurry ..im just gona order the bloody thing :)

..im a changed man..amd/nvid ->intel/ati (never would have thought)

thanks a lot for all your help cookeh :)

PSU wise, if that goes it can take out the entire system.
If it doesn't blow up, it might not supply enough power to certain components, again resulting in death :p

My pleasure :)

so that corsair 600w will b more than enough for all that then i take it ?!

..have to admit all the systems where the psu has blown on it that ive replaced
on ppl's puters over the years ive never once seen it damage anything else..
maybe theyv all been quite lucky hehe ;p

cheersman
:)

Better safe than sorry ;) I lost a motherboard to a powersupply once :(

600W will be more than enough, even if you decide to overclock both cpu and gpu :p

your right.. it would b just typical aswell ;p im really running low on funds now and gona have to stretch every penny ;( il stretch and get that titan cooler instead of the cheaper artic 1 just incase again heh ;p

thanks again m8 :)

what do ya mean a build log.. as in how it went ?!

i just realized i didnt order any thermal compound.. im sure i read sumwer the non oem 1s come with it already on ..i do have sum cheapjack stuff...not sure whether it HAS to be the best of the best or wat ?!

cheersman

ah i borrowed sum more money and got the compound aswell..sod it.. il eat beans on toast for the rest of my life ..@least i should b able 2 pew pew +render+cubase abit smoother now :)

yus

Compound as in TIM? The cooler you bought will come with it pre-applied, and its not bad stuff :p

Shame you bought it already ;) Build log as in, pics and commentary of you building it :p

Enjoy!

ah ya i did buy it hehe ah no biggy i guess.. just got sent a sandisk extreme 32GB compact flash when i asked for a bloody sdhc card from abu dhabi with sum airmiles grrr ahh not a good day ..anyhoot chin up :)

il post what i can if i can get sent the right card for my cam in time heh ;p

well it all finally arrived..and its built now and running smooth and fast :) thanks cookeh

i have yet to oc it as im abit scared as its all new and dont wana screwit up hehe .. iv been running prime95 now for about 10mins and highest any of the core temps has got is 47 ..im not sure what is a safe range for the i5 750 ..is it up 2 about 80ish ?

plus do u know if the easytune util is relatively safe (even the highest 1?!)

and if tune it with easytune and its stable then can i unapply those settings and set them manually in the bios ? (same thing or pointless?!)

cheers ears :)
