Ok well...

Just most problerly a stupid question but im looking at building my own rig within the next few days and i have gone for the i5 should i be going for the i7 as the i5 will be next to go out of date or even the i9...

Could someone explain as to what each model does..? I am mainly looking for gaming that what i was my CPU for...which also i have been told to go with AMD as thats more gaming with i will be doing what do you think?

Thanks

For gaming use, i5 will be perfect. People buy the i7 for more future proof and for stuff that is heavy on the cpu. The i9;s will be over £400 so dont bother lol.

Well no. You can see where I said "future proof" but the i5's will peform really good in any game for atleast 5 years. The i7's like are said for more heavy use such as; photo editing etc.

If you do go down the i7 route, get the i7 860 (p55).

i5 is the happy medium for performance and cost. i7 (the LGA1156 variety) adds hyper-threading. i7 (the LGA1366 variety) add triple-channel memory and more PCIe lanes, but has to be overclocked to be worthwhile. i9 adds six-cores.

Hyper-threading will do little for your gaming performance. Triple-channel memory offers no benefits with quad-core CPUs. More PCIe lanes only become relevant with Crossfire/SLI. i9 will be prohibitively expensive.

Future proofing is a myth.

Twizla honestly fella how many of these threads are you going to create lol. In each one valid specs have been posted along with relevant information such as future-proofability, expected performance and part recommendations; is there really a need for one or two new threads everyday?
Sorry if this is seen as a rant post but it's starting to get annoying...
An i5 spec is fine and will last for a long time to come; as would any AM3 chip or i7 chip. It's down to what you can afford.

Seeeing as i have made 5 threads in the past 3 years i hardly would count that as a lot

Im spending £900 which is a lot and want the best for my money if my threads are annoying i dont care ignore them!

Have you considered AMD AM3 965? I bought one of this yesterday and must say it is ace for gaming.

AM3 has some future, it will support AMD 6 core and maybe bulldozer, i'm not 100% on bulldozer support.
