i5 Macbook's ?

I wish, I have money sitting around waiting for them. I suspect it'll be a few weeks now at least otherwise they'd have folded a quick announce into their event...but to be honest who knows, I'd happily be wrong and see them released tomorrow...

I'm also after the i5 MBP, but if it's not coming out just yet it's probably a good thing, this way I can save up a few more pennies and dump an SSD into it also :D

tbh looking at the prices on apple store, they need to release the i5/i7 as for £1500 for a 15 inch laptop with only a core 2 and 4gb ram and 9600m graphics is poor,

I'm hoping next revision will come with I7 new ATI 5 series card and possibly a SSD for that sort of price to make value for money.

only problem with apple they dont lower prices on there tech when it is out dated

Its gonna happen.
Its a logical progression for one.
Secondly it will suit apple with their dual GPU 'battery/power' GPU feature (even better battery life)
Thirdly, Intel messed up an ad that said 'win a MacPro i7...' :p.

if anyone wants to join in then im making up rumours that they are skipping i5 and just using a couple of there own processors out of the ipad. all because of hackintosh

in reality ive been waiting for this update for what seems like forever! would be a total waste too buy now

It would really need to be I7 at top price point as you can can get I7 laptops now round the £1500 price range.

I reckon AMD are holding it up on graphics

£1500? You can get i7's for £650 from Dell with a half decent graphics card.

The perfect update for the MBP would be an i5 chip, updated gfx card and standard SSD. That would be a hell of a machine and would warrant the excessive price of the machines. I doubt the standard SSd thing will happen mind you, i think it'll just be standard chip based updates.

Would be extremely surprised by blu-ray inclusion. Maybe it's because of all the speculation and rumours centred around the iPad but it seems strange that there hasn't been an increase in rumours relating to a MB pro refresh.

Having said that, Apple might do what they did after the September event last year, when they announced the iPod updates, and then a few weeks later updated the iMacs and Mac Mini.

Either way, it would be nice to see i5 and i7 chips being introduced, along with SSDs.

I don't see bluray happening any time soon, it's still a fairly niche requirement (I don't remember the last time I put a disk in my macbook pro to be honest) and it conflicts with Apple's desire to make itunes the one stop media shop.

I don't see a config with an SSD either, a decent size one would hurt the headline price too much and unless it's a decent size it'll be too small for most people. What's wrong with the built to order SSD options (price of the 256GB option aside).

Truth be told all it's really lacking is a quad core and the necessary graphics upgrade.

Intel pretty much confirmed the i5 MacBook Pro's when they leaked an advertisement earlier this year.

I'm concerned about the graphics in the new models though, I really hope that Apple doesn't go for the Intel solution even on the lowest MacBook Pro model. Although it would have no trouble playing back HD content it is slower than a discrete GPU from even 2 years ago, the 9400M in the current series would outperform it.

Online benchmarks show the Intel GMA HD outperforming the 9400M, so it's a step that I could possibly see Apple taking, especially in the MBP 13" that probably won't have discrete graphics.

3DMark01 3DMark03 3DMark05 3DMark06
Nvidia 210M 17682 10333 6710 3394
Intel GMA HD 9513 4926 3429 1814
Nvidia 9400M 8703 4231 3151 1356

Not to mention that currently intel don't ship an i5 chip without integrated graphics to my knowledge.

If they did it would at least simplify my decision about whether to get another 15" or go for the 13"

Its liek comparing the core 2 range of deskto chips to the new "i" rannge of intel chips.

Answer is yes, they will be much faster and most efficient :p

Phil

Not necessarily, with the lower end chips in particular the real world performance difference isn't exactly huge and the TDP will likely remain exactly the same as the previous generation.

The high end machines will benefit most - there's no question a mobile i7 quad core will be easiest the fastest Apple laptop ever and the flexible clock speed should help power saving too.

The lower end i5 (and I guess potentially i3) machines not so much, they won't be quad core and the performance benefit over current dual core chips likely won't be very big in the real world. They also lack some of the more advanced power saving features of the top end i7 chips.

Basically, if you were thinking of buying a top end Macbook Pro 15" then it'll be a big thing. If you were looking at a 13" mid range machine then don't wait expecting some huge performance gain out of the refresh.
