Which is most future proof?

i5 or am3? Friend wants to build gaming rig. I only ask as I hear the new AMD 6 cores will be on am3.

I find intels 2 socket approach a bit weird, is i5 socket going to die soon?

best bet would be to check out a review based on the two.
but if its purely for gaming then i guess am3 would come out cheaper?!

Go AM3 as it will have a better upgrade path if thats what you're primarily after. Intel's high end for this year will all be on skt1366 so any large upgrades (e.g. extra cores) will be on that platform instead. AMD's 6 core will hopefully (and based on their current pricing) have a far more reasonable price tag compared to intel's.

The question is whats best to do. Get a good quad core i5 and overclock to say 3.6-4GHz and not need to upgrade for a long time or go AM3 and have a couple of interim upgrades along the way if they're needed.

I personally have gone for the "overclocked quad core and keep for a long time" route.
