i5 or i7?

Per your other thread. i7 860. The 4850 will be more than adequate.

Ok so how is this for a final build:

£120 - ASUS P7P55D - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-360-AS

Although I am currently watching the deluxe version of this on eBay that I may be able to get cheaper, is it worth going up to a deluxe? I don't know what the advantages are. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-362-AS

£232 - Intel i7 860 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-298-IN

£83 - Patriot Sector 5 Viper II 4GB 1600MHz - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-026-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

£65 - OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-031-OC&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

If that's all good then I am going to now need a CPU cooler and a new HD monitor as I am only using a LG Flatron 19 inch atm.

I always settle for what I need at the time and regret it so this time I want to go for the best I can get within a decent price range.

I am going to record and render everyday pretty much.

My current set up is:
*Gigabyte Technology M61PME-S2P motherboard
*AMD Athlon II x2 dual core 245 - 2.9ghz - 2mb L2 cache processor
*Kingston hyper X 4gb (2 x 2gb) DDR2 800mhz dual channel ram
*ATI Radeon 4850 GDDR3 PCI express - 512mb graphics card
*Seagate barracuda 7200.12 - 500gb - 7200rpm - 16mb cache - average 8.5 seconds seek time
*Corsair VX450W power supply

My plan from the advice of these guys is to get a new CPU, mobo, psu and perhaps grab a couple of samsung spinspoint HDD in raid 0.

As far as I am aware the ATI 4850 should be fine!?!?

I'd just slap a 925 in there, if you fish around you can get one for less than 100.

Unless you do that 4-8hrs a day then grab i7 920 and OC the nuts out of it.
Or dual xeons for some 8core fun.

What's wrong with the 1156 socket? From my understanding there is not that much of a difference other than the 1156 will be discontinued soon.

nothing is wrong with it but whats the point in choosing 1156 over 1366 if you are spending the same money?

232 for an i7 860 vs 209 for an i7 920
120 quid for a mobo vs 140

3quid+ cheaper to go 1366.

if you dont want to pay for 3x2gb for triple channel then you can still do dual channel with the same memory you would buy for socket 1156

Well this is a socket 1366 set up that was recommended the very helpful CAT-THE-FIFTH:

Core i7 920 ~ £210

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CP-280-IN

3GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ~ £60

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=8&subcat=1389

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R ~ £144

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=5&subcat=1283

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w ~ £61

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-031-OC&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

The total comes to around £475 excluding postage.

But he also gave me this link which compares the i7 920 to i7 860 and the 860 looks better http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=108&p2=47

Phage thanks to you for your help so far too!

Hi Liam - you won't go wrong with either the 860 or the 920. Both are solid choices.
If you are going to OC, get the 920. If not, get the 860.
You have to remember that these guys are enthusiasts, and will always lean towards the very best (and often most expensive) solution. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not always the best solution for everyone. Buy either with confidence.

Thanks for the advice.

I think I have pretty much made my mind up now.

i7 920 build:
i7 920 processor = £210
ASROCK X58 Extreme mobo = £126
Patriot Viper 6gb 1600MHz triple channel ram = £100
Cogage ture spirit heatsink = £25
Corsair TX 650W psu = £72
Artic cooling MX-2 thermal compound = £5
£546

To go into Antec 300 case, ATI Radeon 4850 512MB and Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB HDD (will go raid 0 with Samsung Spinspoint in future).

Good?
