I'm currently building my first computer and I already have an i5 3570k, I was just wondering whether I should get a refund and get an FX-8350.

This is going to be my first gaming PC but I'll be using it for little projects with C#/Lua, creating pixel art, some 3D modeling (and rendering) and some school work.

Here's an idea of the type of games I'll be playing:
  • SoaSE : Rebellion
  • Battlefield 3
  • Total War
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Borderlands 2
Honestly I would rather stick with my i5, but I'm open to suggestions and advice.

There are more and more people taking their own PC`s to work (BYO). Companies are even encouraging it - Its even becoming necessary to get a job at some places. In this regard - The Piledriver blows the i5`s and most of i7`s out of the water Intel has.

Imagine when these medium and smaller companies can start taking advantage of the so many cores AMD has.

personally I would pick the 8 cores vs Intel 4 cores because I could play games and use it for work.

Unfortunately outvoted mate >_< I'm going to stick with my i5 since i already have it and I'm ordering most of the parts this week.

I've only just started my A levels, I doubt I'll have a full-time job anytime soon. Anyways by the time I start working I'm pretty sure this year's CPUs will become redundant.

Thank you all for your input. ^_^

would the FX-8350 be a better choice than the i5 3570k when doing video editing?
i presumed that the 8 cores would be better at such heavy loads, but looking at anandtech's benchmarks it seems that the i5 is a better choice in pretty much all tasks....

They appear to trade blows in those benchmarks. I would probably opt for the FX-8350 if gaming is not a main priority (and you intend on running Windows 8), otherwise i'd just wait and see what Haswell has to offer (if you can wait for another 6 months?).

In those benchmarks the FX also has a 600MHz higher clock. At equal clocks the pileof****driver will be even more behind.

Yea...PD seem to do well only because of its default high clock...if you look at it from the view that it only got around 10-15% of overclocking headroom left, comparing to 39%-45% of Ivy...
