Hey Dudes

I have only had my i5 760 for a week but over Christmas I am going to see if I can overclock to around 4Ghz as that seems to be the mark to hit with them. I am currently running 2 x 2Gb XMS3 but I was looking to get another 2 x 2Gb XMS3 to pop myself upto 8Gb.

I know people are going to ask why, but with all the 3D work I have been doing lately, excluding all the film editing, high resolution picture editing and general tasks like that I think I will need it. I used to top out my 4Gb Ram in my old Q6600 system a fair bit when I had a fair bit running at once.

I understand that having 4 sticks is a harder on the memory controller then 2 sticks, but how much harder and how limiting could this be? I would rather overclock to 3.8Ghz then 4Ghz and have 8Gb ram, then the other way round. Obviously the cheap price on the ram this week is helping tempt me more.

So yea...thoughts?

Your mileage will vary but on an i7 rig i went from 6 to 12gb (3 slots vs 6) without any major issues. Running 6gb @ 4.2 (21 x 200) it was Prime stable, moving to 12gb Prime wasn't stable after more than a few hours. In games / general use it never glitched or fell over once tho @ with 12gb, even after many hours playing CPU intensive games like Black Ops, NFS HP. To get it Prime stable i've dropped back to 4ghz (19 x 210) which has allowed me tighter timings (running at 1600 mem vs 1200) so coupled with the BLK increase from 200 to 210 my cpu benchmarks exactly the same as the 4.2 overclock running at 4ghz.

Running more banks of memory might just mean you have to be a bit more creative with your overclocking, good luck :)
