here is a really useful link to help you understand intel cpu's better than I could explain to you all day

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/processor-numbers.html?iid=prod_core2duo+body_processornumbers

large budget:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £157.99
Total : £157.99 (includes shipping : ).

small budget:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £131.99
Total : £131.99 (includes shipping : ).

Sandybridge, Ivybridge and Haswell are just names for the different generation of cpu's

Sandybridge ------> Ivybridge ---------> Haswell

So Ivybridge replaced Sandybridge, then Haswell replaced Ivybridge. There isn't a huge amount between Sandybridge and Haswell, but if you are buying new it makes more sense to go for the newer tech (Haswell) as the other two are dead sockets.

Haswell itself is having a refresh with Haswell-E which I believe is using the same socket 1150.

Just want to clear this up, as its not correct.

Haswell is 1150 and uses (currently) the Z87/H87/H85/H81 chipset.

The 'Haswell refresh' only includes up-scaled CPU clocks (2500k>2550k) and will launch with the Z97/H97 chipset (which actually isn't needed to run it, appearently).

Broadwell (ivybridge to Haswell's Sandybirdge) does require the new Z97/H97 chipset and will be released later on in the year.

Haswell-E is the next step for Ivybridge-E on the 2011 Socket, currently on the X79 platform, rumoured to be moving to the X99 chipset for its release. It is also said to feature DDR4 RAM for the first time. :)

I never mentioned Broadwell :p I realise that the Haswell refresh will have different chipsets. I guess it will just be a case of a bios update to use a current 4670k/4770k in a z97 board.
