At the mo I have an i5 750 running at 3.8 at around 1.3V now I have some money from Christmas and was wondering how much performance I would gain from an I7 2600K? The board would be an MSI P67A-GD55 and I would use the rest of the Hardware in my rig, only problem is I have a OEM copy of win7, won't work on the new board will it? and I don't have enough money to buy a new OS :( I would like to get the I7 up to 4.7 on air!

Thanks

What is the main use of the PC? If it's solely games then I think the general consensus is that an upgrade from the i5/i7 1156/1366 is not worth it currently. 4Ghz should be fine for a long time and fairly easy with a decent air cooler.

As vader says, what do you use the machine for?

If you are mainly gaming, then an upgrade from the 5830 would be much more effective.

Also, using the money for a new, shiny IPS (or 120Hz/3D) monitor would be nice investment.

I would only suggest upgrading to SB if your main use is something very CPU heavy - that will make good use of the extra CPU power.

Yes the main use of the pc is heavy gaming. :) I don't do anything that's CPU heavy apart from when I edit the odd movie in premiere pro for school work, so usually just gaming :)

As mentioned above, if you want to see an improvement in games it would be better to get a new gpu. At higher resolutions with decent settings (aa/af) the difference between the cpus is negligible to say the least.

You could upgrade if you use a lot of cpu heavy apps, but by the end of the year you'll be wondering why you didn't wait for skt 2011, which will bring even more improvements and possibly quad channel memory.

The fact is there's something new coming out all of the time :p
