hi

after a bit of advice on the best way to upgrade my set up.
currently running a 775 setup

Q6600,P5N-E SLI, 4GB OCZ PC6400, 8800GTS 320MB,Seagate 320gb,XiFi Extreme music

now ive received an i5 2500k as a gift so have decided to upgrade the rest of my system. now the pc isnt used for games so im happy to keep my old graphics card.just need some advice on whats the best value for money motherboard and 4gb ram.

have between 100 to 150 to spend
thanks

I woundn't get the Vengence RAM, too big heatsinks, will get in the way of any big air cooler, if you decide to have one. Any low profile ram will be just as good: Hyper X, XMS3 or even Vengeance LP.

Thats a good motherboard too.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard REV 1 £84.98
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £33.59
1 x Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £21.98
Total : £151.96 (includes shipping : £9.50).

This one?

Doesn't come with socket 1155 fittings it seems, so I don't think so I'm afraid. Fitted a cooler in which will work, comes in under 150 as you have free shipping remember!

Forgot to mention I've got a Tuniq tower CPU heat sink.can you use this with i5 processors

Is this the original TT120 or the extreme? You can get a 1156 backplate for the extreme version that may also fit onto the normal 120 but from what i've heard the TT 120 isn't very good with quad core CPU's becuase of some type of design flaw. Someone else may know more about this.

You'd probably be better off getting something like a CM 212 EVO.

Thanks for all the help. Can I ask would the above board be decent for overclocking?
One thing i remember from when I overclocked my c2d was that the board I had didn't rely on the ram settings. Is this still something I need to be aware of

Here's some reviews, it's a great board for the price :)

Not sure what you mean for the RAM settings. Best thing to do is set the RAM settings manually in the BIOS to what is stated on them, as that's what they've been tested at.

Probably something like this:

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £90.00
Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B) £35.99

There's other options if you wanted to use the entirety of your £150 budget to get a better motherboard or are still using a 32bit OS so can only use 4gb ram. But thats a solid budget setup with 8gb of RAM.

That mobo doesnt do quicksync. Although it does do SLI/xfire properly the OP isnt bothered about gaming so losing quicksync could be a deal breaker (it seriously helps speed up video encoding for those who don't know).

I think Beej has the right idea. That D3 mobo doesnt do SLI/Xfire but has quick sync and the other Z series goodies. I don't like how that crucial RAM looks but it is cheaper than the "flashier" looking kits.

As stulid isn't here (yet) i'll link the forum thread he uses to help novice overclockers with this mobo. Good luck with the upgrade, any questions or problems you know where we are :)

thanks for the help

most likely gonna go for the gigabyte board with the video feature as that should come handy

would it be worth gettinbg 8gb ram if majority of the usage is gonna be internet browsing and general admin work

Its cheap at £35, do you have a 64bit OS for it?
