Currently waiting for a Dell Ultrawide 3440 x 1440 to arrive. A lot of the commentary I've read points to the fact at that resolution it will be a GPU bottle neck (1080ti) rather than CPU and an upgrade would only be a minor benefit.

I can't find true benchmark comparisons in games at that resolution - I know the 8700k is better in benchmarks but I want to make sure if I upgrade it's worthwhile for gaming as I do not do anything else on it.

I already have DDR4 ram and a suitable cooler so it would be the Mobo and CPU only (plus a phone call to microsoft to reset my key no doubt).

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £561.92 (includes shipping: £0.00)

You have a possible enthusiast level monitor coming, an enthusiast gpu so you may not be budgeting this time around so ask yourself is the 6600k an enthusiast level cpu?

I think you know the answer already. :)

The monitor is indeed enthusiast level. The distinction I can't seem to find any real data on is whether the CPU upgrade will be noticeable.

Are we looking at 5-10fps or 25-30fps. From the small amount of posts I can find it appears that you're lucky to see 5-8fps difference at the higher resolution in which case near £600 to upgrade probably isn't worth it at this stage.

While budget isn't an issue I do prefer upgrading at a time where it's a noticeable benefit rather than simply nicer on paper. All about the enjoyment to £ ratio. Ha! :D

You will see a difference depending on a game by game situation but 4 threads vs 12 threads is a big difference and while running Windows related tasks in the background.

The 8700K is now at a great price considering the 7700K with only 8 threads was this price not so long ago. When you're on this level of components balance is still important. Don't put a mid range Cpu with high end monitors and graphics cards when you can afford the best.

It's not only about frames imo.
