i7-10700K to 9800X3D - worth it for 3440x1440 165hz?

I'm well out of the loop with recent hardware. I have a 10700k and a 3080 GPU. I play mainly RPG and FPS at 3440x1440 165hz. I highly doubt I'll be replacing my monitor anytime soon.

Just curious if I'll actually see any improvement at all at this res? The PC is used for gaming only, no other tasks.

I want to move away from custom loop and go back to air cooling and figured I might do an upgrade at the same time.

I would say worth it, especially if you want to push the frame rate. Fact is that a 10700K probably can't drive 165FPS in many modern titles, and a 9800X3D can. Your GPU might not be able to keep up, but you certainly won't be lacking in the CPU department with that upgrade.

Edit, this vid today from HUB shows what I mean

I'd say absolutely. My friend with a 3080 went from a 9700K to a 7800X3D and saw nearly doubled the framerate in some games like Tarkov at that resolution. Obviously the 10700K had HT but even so it will make a large impact in some games.

HT makes very little difference to CPU's with 8+ cores when it comes to games, so that can be discounted.

Cheers, I have zero interest in overclocking or mucking about in the BIOS. Just want to turn on PC, game, turn off PC. Shame it doesn't have a 10 GbE NIC but they seem mega expensive.

I assume my current NVMe will work? Think it's a Force MP510 Gen3 or similar.

Aware I would need new RAM but if I can save some NVMe money that's a bonus, I don't think I would massively benefit from the uplift from gen 3 to 4.

Oh, and assuming I can't get a 9800X3D any time soon, is there a CPU I can get in the mean time that won't perform any worse that I would not lose much money on at all if I got the board/RAM first?

I'd just pick up a 7600 for a bit over £150 which will still be faster than what you have now. Shouldn't lose much on resale.

Used 7600x or 7700x wont lose much money if you get a good enough deal on one.

Then get a 9800x3d later on.

Don't even need to get an "x" variant really. A 7600 is just as good if you want to fiddle with it very slightly. You'll get 7600x performance and save some money. Haven't checked prices recently though. Although saying that all I've done with my 7600 is ran curve optimiser. Negative 50 on all cores. Thing just smashes it. For a stop gap CPU i've been impressed with it (nearly 1 year to the date).

Agree I have a 7600 as well as a 7800x3d (and a 7500f) and it's a great CPU!
