So my current build is:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600 3.4ghz turboboost
Motherboard: Foxconn H67MP-S/-V/H67MP
Memory: 6GB,Samsung 1333mhz DDR3 M378B5773CH0-CH9
GPU: MSI R9 290
PSU: SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold"

And i have just ordered the following:

Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty-M professional Z77
Memory: 16GB Gskill 2400mhz DDR3
And a new cooler..

With the i7 2600 being second generation and me upgrading my ram/motherboard/cpu cooler and potentially the case..

Would it be worth (with pay-day being next week) Picking up a more modern CPU i.e. the i7-3770K? With the 2600 it has no over-clock ability and with me having a better motherboard/ram/cooler id fancy a slightly faster CPU as well as upgrading my GPU over to an nvidia 980ti at some point in the near future.

Cheers

You can overclock the 2600 to 4.2GHz on certain Z77 boards I believe. My Gigabyte Z77 is able to do that at least. Worth checking if yours can.

there isn't any real upgrade on the platform the only ones which are better are 2600k, 2700k and 3770k but some argue the igpu of the 3770k holds it back and wont allow it to clock as high as sandybridge giving the 2600k/2700k the advantage.
