Hi,

I would be grateful if anyone can give me some advice on things to look at to try to resolve a BSOD with an i7 2600k that occurs minutes after starting Prime95.

I am using an ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe motherboard and I used the AI Suite Turbo tool to achieve the overclock rather than a manual overclock. I did it this way as I am a total noobos at overclocking and this seemed a safe place to start !!

The AI Suite settled on an overclock of 4.43GHz and the PC booted up OK. However, minutes after starting Prime95 and RealTemp I get the BSOD. Temperatures before the BSOD are mid sixties and look to be OK.

The system is stable at the stock CPU speed and runs Prime95 and RealTemp OK without crashing with temperatures around the mid fifties. I am using a pair of Noctua NF-F12's on a Corsair H80 with the fans connected to the board CPU fan header with a PWM Y connector using the LNA adapter adapter to keep the fan speeds to a max of 1200rpm.

At the moment, I am not sure if it is the settings applied by the AI Suite to achieve the overclock that is causing the BSOD or if it is hardware related. I suppose the best option would be to discard the AI Suite overclock settings and manually overclock the CPU bit by bit. However, for a mega total noobos to "clocking" that seems scary?

Any advice most appreciated.

Not enough voltage on the CPU possibly. Is it possible to increase the voltage via the the program? If so, increment it slightly (0.01V), test, repeat until it's stable. Watch temps of course :).

As you're overclocking using software then it may be changing things that shouldn't be changed, such as the Base Clock.

If the Base Clock has been increased beyond 100MHz then that's one potential problem.

I'd also check your RAM is operating at the correct speed, timings and voltage.

Did you test everything was working properly at stock settings?

Everything seemed to be OK at stock settings, I have had Prime95 and RealTemp running for 30 minutes with temperatures around 56C without any problems.

There was one point I noticed with the RAM, I have 4 x 4gb GSkill Ripjaws 1600MHz in the PC but when I check the RAM with CPU-Z it is indicating different max bandwidth values for the RAM in slots 1/3 and 2/4. The RAM in slots 1/3 is showing as PC3-10700 (667MHz) and the RAM in slots 2/4 is showing as PC3-12800 (800MHz), however, the part mumbers for all of the RAM is the same, ie, F3 12800CL9-4GBXL. I am not sure what is going on here, possibly some contribution to my problems??

OK, I have checked the base clock (bus speed?) and it had been increased from 100MHz to 103MHz by the AI Suite auto tune. I have gone back into the BIOS, reset to default setting then done a less ambitious overclock of 3.8GHz using base clock of 100MHz and "By All Cores" (multiplier?) of 38.

This has now been stable for 20 minutes running Prime95 with maximum CPU temperatures for each of the cores at 62C, 66C, 67C and 62C. I also removed the PWM functionity on the Noctuas by plugging them directly into the H80 so they are running at 1200rpm each. The core voltage is showing as 1.296v.

Would anyone please be able to let me know if the above figures for temperature and voltage seem to be OK for an i7 2600k at 3.8GHz, particularly the variance on the 4 core temeratures? If they are, I will see if I can push up the multiplier a bit to get to 4.2GHz.

This is a bit scary for a "puppy clocker" however, the need for speed is greater than the apprehension of fried chips for tea tonight. That's a thought, chippy tea tonight sounds quite nice, bread and butter with mug of hot strong tea, proper northern cuppa, stand yer spoon in it !!
