i7 2600K Dramatic Core Temperature Differences

Hello,

I am testing the i7 and I noticed the temperature of each core are very different.

In idle the hottest core is 26º and the coolest 18º. Under load (prime95) the hottest is 56º and the coolest 48º.

I am using a Thermalright Archon Rev A using the TIM bundled with the heatsink.

Any hints?

Regards.

That's normal, the cooler surface or the Integtrated heat spreader on the CPU may not be completely flat and the calibration of the sensors will also affect on the final reading.

As RJC has already explained it's a normal anomoly.

One of my cores is nearly 10 degrees hotter at idle and it too doesn't balance out under load.

You could try a re-seat of the HS if you're worried it's not making full contact (always a slight possibility) - but the odds are it's probably a sensor anomoly.

My 2700K had a 10C difference between cores. I removed the waterblock, thinking maybe there wasn't enough TIM to cover the chip. There was TIM over the whole face, so that wasn't the cause. I put on a little more than usual this time, and for some reason my temp spread is now only 6C!

I have no idea why my spread is lower now (still with good temps), and my results are probably not repeatable (well, unless I sell the 2700K to fund a 3770K in a few months, the block is there for as long as the system :) )
